Sometimes I really hate my race. (chimpout.com)

So he didn’t see Aladdin?

If it’s racist for the Japanese to hate the Koreans, is it racist for the French to hate the Germans? There’s a difference between racism and nationalism.

Racism is a particular kind of ethnocentrism. While ethnocentrism isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, there’s no reason it has to take the particular form of racism. Medieval Europeans didn’t hate black people, did they? Racism against black people was a consequence of the African slave trade, not a cause.

Of course its the Brits’ fault. Everything is the fault of the bloody Brits.

Yeah that damn white…race…for…umm…being…umm…racist.

Well, I think the Irish would feel differently when it comes to the British…

You’re confused. Many Japanese hate Koreans and Chinese because of racism, not nationalism. It was Japan that invaded and occupied Korea and large parts of China, but the other way around for France and Germany. It’s just nationalism (or misplaced historical and political bitterness) for Koreans to hate Japanese. “Korea,” “Japan,” “France,” and “Germany” are nations, not races.

:::EDIT:::

Err, wait, you were confused about who invaded who (it seems), but right about the differences between racism and nationalism.

Meh. Sites like that (admittedly I only pulled it up long enough to see the homepage) don’t bother me nearly as much as sites like Free Republic. Chimpout is clearly a bunch of imagination free impotent nobody snarkers, while Freepers are more likely out there making Ann Coulter richer and buying gold from Glenn Beck and arranging dumbass tea parties- plus it’s almost refreshing to see people who at least anonymously don’t even deny they’re racism instead of trying to veil it with talk of ‘welfare mothers’ and ‘inner city youth’ and feeling that you can neuter the racism from any statement by beginning it with “I am not a racist” or mentioning your [whatever race you aren’t] friends.

Less it be said that being white I’m immune, I’ve said several times that as a gay man I find Fred Phelps & crew to be just a bothersome bunch of loons while Paul Cameron and Dobson and crew who claim to ‘love the sinner’ are the really diabolical ones.

rivulus, I was gonna PM you but you seem to have it turned off.

There is no doubt that the division of society based at least partly on skin tone existed in India from Vedic times. The caste system originated in the concept of Varna, or “colour”. This was something we learnt in our history books at school here in India.

While the writer of the article you referenced may be technically correct that caste trumps skin colour, it’s remarkable how in general the skin colour differs between castes. This is more noticeable in southern India where the general skin colour is darker than the north, but Tamilian Brahmins are distinctly fairer.

The whole thing is complicated, and not completely colour-based, but anyway it definitely antedates the British.

Huh?

Aryans referred to I understood to be the intrusion of Indo European language speakers in pre / early historic times.

What do Muslims (mostly Turks) have to do with that?

Racist comments are the norm on the local newspaper and television news sites. Nobody goes right out and uses the n-word, but you see a lot of comments blaming African-Americans for all of society’s ills. Whatever the problem, blacks are behind it. Robbery in the suburbs? Must be someone “from the city” that came in and did it. Fight in a school? Were the students involved those that moved to the district “from the city?”

It’s really quite sad.

Aryan = Persian.

In older industrial cities, middle-class racially integrated neighborhoods are quite rare. These cities were largely settled before the onset of the civil rights movement, and old prejudices – not just racial, but ethnic – run quite deep. No, you won’t see much in the way of employment discrimination, cross-burning, lynching and the like, but when too many blacks move into a neighborhood that is otherwise white, it reaches a “tipping point” where whites begin to flee. Compare that to cities that developed largely after the 1960s, where whites and blacks moved into new suburban neighborhoods together from the start, and more residents are transplants rather than natives with deeply held prejudices.

There’s a saying among urban geographers: in the Rust Belt, neighborhoods are integrated only from the time the first black person moves in until the last white person leaves. Neighborhoods that make a conscious effort to promote racial integration (some eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Buffalo’s Parkside neighborhood) achieve some success. Not all attempts at stable racial integration in the Rust Belt are successful (Southfield, Michigan; Matteson, Illinois)

The OP writes “Why not move to an ethnically-mixed neighborhood that has a higher socioeconomic status, or a lower crime rate, or better control of gang and drug problems.” In St. Louis, there’s not many areas to choose from, and those that are out there are often in transition from being predominantly white neighborhoods to predominantly African-American.

A guy I used to work with, a supervisor- very good one- at a cubicle farm where I worked, was an all around nice guy. He was also a husband/father/church member/charity volunteer- super nice guy. He looked a lot like Robin Harris(“Bebe’s Kids”), wore cardigans and loved Barbra Mandrell- in other words, not your regular gangbanger type.
We lost touch after I changed jobs so I was saddened to hear about a year ago that he caused and was killed in a three car accident. Some others were injured badly enough to go to the hospital but he was the only one killed and I don’t think the others were that seriously injured.

A few days later it was released that Greg had suffered a massive heart attack while driving home, so massive that if the accident had not killed him the heart attack probably would have. While terrible and unfortunate it was nobody’s fault; Greg didn’t intend to have a massive heart attack while driving on a busy highway, and those injured when he lost control of his car because of it were just victims of random shit-happens wrong-place-wrong-time bad luck that could happens to us all.

Reason for mentioning: while Greg and I weren’t super close (good friends at work but not bowling buddies and one of those friendships that ends when you take new jobs) I was shocked when I heard he was dead- anytime somebody you’ve talked to a good bit will shock you when they die young- so I went to the websites for the local newspaper and TV stations to find out what happened. Both already had long columns of comments from people who didn’t know him, didn’t see the accident, hadn’t even read the stories probably, all mentioning how “this is what happens when crackheads get behind the wheel” or “probably talking on his cell phone with one hand and smoking a Kool with the other” and other things that were just as racist as if they’d said “dumb nigger killed a bunch of people while shooting up heroin”. Infuriating and sickening, especially when you’d known the guy and knew that his family was probably going to be looking at those sites at some point.
The worst part is that when the news about the heart attack was released, the comments continued! Obviously it was a crack related heart attack. The fact that not one single mention of Greg having been using drugs or DUI at the time was made in the articles and, quite to the contrary, they all said he wasn’t- it was a heart attack- well that’s because “nobody’s going to say that it was caused by a crackhead during an election year”. Just mindblowing the contortions that these people- most of whom are probably church going family values flag waving Chrisjuns- can make to fit their world view (and one of many cases that made me wish people could be more easily held legally accountable for libel on comment boards because I’d pay good money just to watch one of these asshole anonypundits get served with a subpoena).

How sad for the family and friends of your coworker. Kind of what I’d expect to see from a newspaper or local television news site nowadays. I wonder if they attract a disproportionately large number of racists, or if – and I really hope it’s not the case – such opinions are the norm.

Seems it’s not just the racists at work here. A large menorah on private property in a predominantly Jewish suburb: It’s an attack on Christmas!

I have nothing to add than the observation I spent an hour puzzling over that website address. Chim Pout? What the hell does Chim Pout have to do with racists? It only just dawned on me.

That’s really messed up, Sampiro.

I hate it, because it’s stuff like that which actually stokes the flames for the paranoid, hypersensitive, angry black person–the kind of person who flips out when they, say, are given bad service at a restaurant or are pulled over by the cops. Then some narrow-minded white people see them act that way and it only confirms their prejudiced views. And they’ll post what they saw on a message board and spread the hatred. And thus the cycle continues…

I spent some time on the site as well, and I wondered that same thing. I think it refers to how some blacks become very agitated and overdramtic in certain situations, often reacting to a real or imaginary racial slight, and that behavior is labeled a “chimpout”. Like freakout, but done by a black person. Best guess I can make, anyway.

Anyway, I can understand that some people don’t like blacks, but some of the posters there have thousands of posts! What a waste of time! I guess that there are some people that put in a day’s work, come home, have dinner, crack open a beer (made in a brewery where black people work) and instead of logging onto The Straight Dope, log onto chimpout and get really into the hate thing.

Yeah yeah, black people are like monkeys. Black people are stupid. Black people are criminals. Black men want to rape the white wimmens. Whatever. Even were it true, is it worth anybody’s time to spend hours talking about it on a freaking board? Stay in your white neighborhood, keep your shotgun loaded, and watch some TV. Or God forbid, read a book.

Flips out? You mean CHIMPS OUT!

sorry

Oh, this is definitely true. I’m certainly an example.
