I’m having a game with a coworker, she says a word…I say a song lyric with it. She said “cube”…but I’m not allowed to use anything by ice cube…or talking about him. Help!!!
Can you mention just plain ice cubes? I give you Ian Anderson’s “Habanero Reel”:
Rum and cola, ice cubes crashing
Jumping beans and brown eyes flashing…
“Silent E,” by Tom Lehrer – once used on the PBS educational show The Electric Company.
Who can turn a cub into a cube?
Who can turn a tub into a tube?
It’s elementary
For silent e
Also, “She’s My Girl,” by Tom Lehrer:
In winter the bedroom is one large ice cube,
And she squeezes the toothpaste from the middle of the tube.
Her hairs in the sink
Have driven me to drink,
But she’s my girl, she’s my girl, she’s my girl,
And I love her.
De La Soul, What’s More:
“May the cube be with you - Always
And your father - wo ho ho.”
- Thomas Dolby, from “Aliens Ate my Buick.”
I’m sure there’s nerdcore that mentions the TImecube.
Thanks everyone! I successfully won that round. I have the next word she gave me…but I’ll wait a while before I ask everyone here.
Well, there this one, which I wrote. I hardly ever write love songs, but once in a while, I stumble across what might just be an original angle. Caveat emptor.
LOVE DEEP DOWN
COPYRIGHT MR 2010 by Sam A. Robrin or whoever the hell it is who writes these things. Go ahead and use it, but if you make a little money on it, I want some!
Every time I hold her hand,
I’ll be reminded of
That little gold-and-diamond band–
The symbol of our love
My love for you
Goes deep down, too–
Way deep down, and all the way through.
The path of love may twist and bend,
But things come out right in the end.
I wanted to ask her to marry me,
And planned out a little surprise.
It always warms up my heart to see
That look of delight in her eyes.
It occurred to me that it might be nice
To freeze the ring in a cube of ice.
I asked her to come to my house that night.
Cooked a dinner to please a king.
Served cocktails for two by candlelight,
And gave her the one with the ring.
“For a special lady: a special drink.”
And she did–exactly what you think.
My love for you
Goes deep down, too–
Way deep down, and all the way through.
path of love may twist and bend,
But things come out right in the end.
“I like to eat ice cubes,” she said with a pout,
And the perfect date went ka-boom.
I hadn’t planned upon going out–
Not to the emergency room!
Nurses, X-rays, exams, technicians–
Love thrives under the worst conditions.
The doc called us in and had this to say:
“It’s not sharp, like a thumbtack or glass.
With a couple of pills, you should be okay.
Don’t worry–this, too, shall pass.”
And though I expected to take the blame,
That sweet girl married me just the same.
My love for you
Goes deep down, too–
Way deep down, and all the way through
The path of love may twist and bend
But things come out right in the end.
You don’t need to know exactly how,
But we managed to retrieve it.
That ring is on her finger now,
Never again to leave it.
Every time I hold her hand,
I’ll be reminded of
That little gold-and-diamond band–
The symbol of our love.
My love for you
Goes deep down, too–
Way deep down, and all the way through.
The path of love may twist and bend,
But things come out right in the end.
“Sugar Lump” by John Martyn. Link has it preceded by “Bless the Weather” (which is the better song, actually).
Geez, how could it have taken this long for me to think of this?
“Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)” by Donovan has the line:
I’ll buy you a sugar cube
Buy you a sugar cube
I’ll buy you a sugar cube
If you just give me some of your love
The Animals also covered this song. I believe it’s based on a much older blues bit, but the sugar cube line probably originated with Donovan in reference to a method of delivery of LSD that was prevalent at the time.
Am I too late to mention the song “Ape Call” by Nervous Norvus? It includes the line,
“Don’t be a cube, Rube. Go ape!”
