Yesterday I found myself humming The Brighter Side Of Darkness’ Love Jones and had a giggle imagining it on a mix CD of love songs, which got me to thinking: what are the absolute cheesiest love songs? What songs would make you burst into uncontrollable fits of laughter if you were to receive them on a CD or hear them dedicated to you on the radio?
Love Jones - The Brighter Side Of Darkness
I Honestly Love You - Olivia Newton John
3 You Light Up My Life - Debbie Boone (Ok, not quite a love song, but it counts.)
“Love Will Keep Us Together” The Captain and Tennile
“Sometimes When We Touch” Dan Hill
“I Want You To Want Me” Lobo
Sadly, I have a history with all those songs.
The Captain and Tennille’s “Muskrat Love”
Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross’ “Endless Love”
Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)”
I… I was going to say “anything by Air Supply” and then I saw the title “Popsicle Toes”…
I… I just don’t know what to say…
“Open Arms” by Journey.
“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey.
“Any Way You Want It” by Journey.
Actually, most songs by Journey.
Steeeeeeeeeve PERRy! Steve Perry. Steve PERRY.
Many songs from the “bubble gum” era of rock.
Yummy, Yummy (I got love in my tummy).
Sugar, Sugar (Was the song of the year 1969, unreal).
A couple classics did come out of that era though.
Build me up, Buttercup.
Cherish.

“Popsicle Toes” is actually pretty good, as done by both Michael Franks or Diana Krall.
“Muskrat Love,” while popularized by C&T, was written by Willis Allan Ramsey, who’s version is also pretty good.
“Sometimes When We Touch,” though…that’s gonna be bad no matter who performs it.
I don’t know what to say-ee-ay-ay…
Here I am, the one that you love!
Asking for another day-ay!
Understand! the one that you love!
Loves you in so many way-ays!
:smack:
ABBA :
Love me or leave me, make your choice
But believe me.
I love you, I do I do I do I do I do. Whoa Oh!
Swedish Cheese at its worst.

Muriel’s Wedding is quite funny though. Lots of ABBA going on there.
Muriel's Wedding: Directed by P.J. Hogan. With Sophie Lee, Roz Hammond, Toni Collette, Belinda Jarrett. A young social outcast in Australia steals money from her parents to finance a vacation where she hopes to find happiness, and perhaps love.
That song makes me laugh because most people don’t seem to realize what the love in their tummy is.
You can all go home now:
“Honey”, sung by Bobby Goldsboro[sp?]
“See the tree how big it grown,
But friend it hasn’t been too long, it wasn’t big…”
Tony Orlando in general.
Tie a yellow ribbon.
Knock three times on the ceiling.
Although, I think they were both #1 hits.
Paul McCartney’s “Silly Love Songs” was specifically written to be a silly love song, as a response to criticism from John Lennon.
I think it succeeded pretty well.
