Song of Ice and Fire (Release dates)

I’ve been waiting for the next book of the Song of Ice and Fire for what feels like forever now. So I decided to go release-date hunting and what I found wasn’t very encouraging. Amazon says sometime in 2013 () but this site, says that’s wrong and it should be released in 2009.

But that factoid is from July, many long months ago.

So, does anyone know anything more about the expected release date for “A Dance With Dragons”?

I wants it!

2013?? Bloody hell! The apocalypse will have come and gone by then.

Last time I checked, it was set for September '08. I’m starting to think it’s not going to come out on time…

Yeah, I read that date too and figured I had an excellent b/d gift for my brother (he loves the series too). But September came and went and I have yet to find a replacement gift for him :frowning:

(We don’t live in the same country and I haven’t seen him in a few months so I still have some time to get him a b/d-Christmas combo)

Grr. Martin’s last update was in January. It’s November! You’d think he’d throw us a bone at least. I know it’s irrational and unfair, but whenever I read a blogpost from him about football I want to punch him.

2013!?

I sincerely hope that he is in good health.

Someone at SFF World says that according to the Westeros fansite, Martin has said he hopes to be finished by Christmas.

That’s the Westeros fansite I’m linking to in the OP, but I can’t see anything about Christmas. They’re saying 2009.

Editing, publishing and distrubting would still take it’s allotted six months regardless of when Martin actually put down the pen.

(Martin’s word on the subject is that the next SOIF update he’ll post will be the one where he can say “I’m done and I’m happy with it.” But between “gold” and release there’s still five-six months for any such huge publication. So it’ll be “date x + six months.” But, of course, at least we can have a proper countdown and celebratory re-reading of the series to bring ourselves back up to speed

The poster at SFF World said that the “finished by Christmas” thing was “buried” at Westeros. I looked and couldn’t find it either – Westeros makes my head hurt.

Wasn’t Martin already half-finished with ADWD when AFWC was released? Was that the book that got too long so he removed some chapters and saved them for the next one?

Yes! ADWD was supposed to follow very shortly after since it was mostly done anyway when the last one came out.

And all my favorite characters are supposed to be in ADWD so it’s the one I really want to read. Stupid GRR Martin getting me hooked on a series and then being unable to write it fast enough to suit my addiction. I barely remember what happened in Feast, though, I should go back and re read it for good measure. I plowed through it in a single sitting when it came out. Maybe if I start from the begining of the series and go slowly enough the new book will be done by the time I finish my re read.

I am thinking I will have to do about 5 pages a day.

That was what I understood, as well. I guess this gives me a chance to reread the entire series from Book 1 again, as I’ve forgotten a lot of what went down, and I’m sure there’s stuff that I missed the first time through.

Amazon has a history of doing this. When they know an upcoming book is being eagerly anticipated, they’ll pull a date out of their ass and start taking preorders.

Says one long-suffering Robert Jordan, well, fan, I guess.

Me, I’m gonna wait on a re-read until I’m holding the last book in my hands. Compared to Erikson’s Malazan series, ASOIAF is pretty easy to follow. At least Martin’s characters have just the one name throughout the books.
