Isn’t the song supposed to be about Rudolf Hess from his point of view?
So, are we going to get closure on this one?
I vote for “conflated Tommy Tutone’s Jenny with Police’s Message in a Bottle”… guess we could do this as a poll, until the OP confirms the fact (and in case he/she never does so.)
I also think it must surely be “Jenny”. But, if we want hit songs from late-70s, vaguely punk-ish English bands, whose singer and principal songwriter played the bass, how about 2-4-6-8 Motorway by the Tom Robinson Band? Also includes the line “3-5-7-9”. Good song.
Or City Boy, with the unforgettable 5.7.0.5.
My guess is 853-5937 by Squeeze. Reached #32 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1988.

She’ll give you a ring when she is home
I thought I was the only one with this song in my head…
Has the OP come back to this thread? Because I can’t believe I didn’t offer up this - from my favorite Squeeze album Babylon and On. If it isn’t Tommy Tutone, I’d wager it being this… good call whitetho!
“She’s in Mill Hill, I’m in Bermondsey…”
Sorry, but I don’t think there was a “seven” in it, let alone at the end.
So have you checked all the songs in this thread? And you can confirm it’s none of them? Can you at least give us a better idea of what songs maybe fit the vibe you’re looking for?
Good sleuthing, but the beat, chords, riff, and feel of Message in a Bottle and Jenny are so close to each other, I’m still willing to bet the OP confounded them. That Squeeze song just doesn’t sound Police-y to me, and especially not like any specific Police song.
I don’t think I have ever seen an OP in one of these threads exhibit so little energy or initiative. dougie_montie, have you listened to any of the suggested songs? If not, why did you start the thread? If youtube links are beyond your computer’s capabilities, how about an Amazon sample MP3? Can you be arsed to listen to this? It’s the Jenny(867-5309) song that several people have mentioned and linked to.
He did listen. For 20 minutes even. He just is stuck in an alternate universe with a very strange self aware $5 bill.
I’m checking those titles out but it takes time. Three per day.
Well, I just went through the first three titles suggested by others who replied in the thread–“Jenny,” “Murder by Numbers,” and “Invisible Sun”–and none matched. Oh, well, tomorrow’s another day…
Do I want to know why you can only listen to 3 samples a day? Actually, I am not sure that I do
If “Jenny” was the third song perhaps he didn’t wish to subject himself to any more torture?
I was wrong. The mystery deepens. Thanks for coming back, doug…and don’t give up 'till we resolve this!
I still can’t believe it’s not “Jenny (867-5309)”.
Well, thanks for checking in.
Since you vetoed my first two choices, I’m going to go with:
