Can’t believe I’m the first to post the quintessential “Hair” by Graham Central Station
For the purposes of this thread, are you sure it wasn’t Hair, There and Everywhere?
When I’m Sixty Four
When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now
** Scarlet Begonias**
She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes.
And I knew without askin’ she was into the blues.
She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls,
I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls.
Then there’s this great exchange between Bo Diddley’s maracas player Jerome Green (his words are in parentheses) and Bo himself, as they’re doing the dozens in “Say, Man”:
(Well, I was walking down the street with your girl the other day)
uh huh
(And the wind was blowing real hard)
Is that right
(And the wind blew her hair into my face)
uh huh
(Hee hee, you know what else happened)
What happened
(The wind blew her hair into her face)
Yeah
(And we went a little further…you wanna hear the rest of it)
I might as well
(The wind blew her hair in the street)
Beggin’ on my knees, won’t you please, run your fingers through my hair?

“Jolene” by Cake.
*
Well Jolene unlocked the thick, breezeway door,
Like she’d done one hundred times before.
Jolene smoothed her dark hair in the mirror.
She folded the towel carefully and put it back in place.
Yeah I want to pull you down into bed.
I want to cast your face in lead.
Well every time I pull you close,
Push my face into your hair,
Cream rinse and tobacco smoke,
That sickly scent is always, always there. *
The here’s ‘She Cut Off Her Long Silken Hair’ by him for your pleasure.

Never heard/heard of a single one.
Regina Spektor – Sampson (vid)
Mullet Kintyre?
Man of La Mancha – The Barber’s Song
And, with this, I retire from Googling this topic, and present a mother lode,
I lied. But someone else maybe can do the research.
Songs on mustaches, sideburns galore.
“A Ghost to Most” by Drive-By Truckers
I guess I’ll never grow a sideburn
it’s a shame with all I’ve got to go between
Ooh, I know, I know, there’s this.
Yep, your hunch that it didn’t originate with Bugs Bunny is spot on. It was a well known song at one time, and written by Stephen Foster, though he wasn’t old when he wrote it. Actually, he died young, so he was never really an old person. Your theory ran a bit off the rails there. ![]()
