Songs About SPAAAACE!

And how about “Rocket Ride,” by Tom Smith?

You realize that he wrote pieces for all the other planets, too (well, except for Earth). They’re all good.

You could also add Enya’s “Shepherd Moons”. It’s an instrumental, but was inspired by the discovery of the moons which maintain the ring system.

And since a few They Might be Giants songs have been mentioned, there’s also “For Science”, and their version of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”.

Or “Never Set the Cat on Fire,” by Frank Hayes.

Where’s captain kirk by spizzenergie and REM

Star Trekkin by The Firm

*To Our Children’s Children’s Children *by The Moody Blues was a concept album based on space travel.

Klaatu
Anus of Uranus
Calling Occupants of Interplantery Craft

Beat me to it! One of my favorite songs; it never explicitly mentions space, I don’t think, but Brian May (who now has a PhD in astrophysics) has said that the song is about a group of space explorers who take a long trip at relativistic speeds…one year passes for them while 100 years passes back on Earth.

Dancin’ in the Moonlight"

The definitive spacerock band is Hawkwind. Here’s a Youtube playlist of the Space Ritual album.

If you want stuff that deals with aliens and other fortean topics, I highly recommend Pressurehed’s album Explaining the Unexplained.

Oh, and if you want a song specifically about astronomers, there’s “Quark, Strangeness, and Charm”.

There’s also Farflung. For example:

Vision of Infinity

Unborn Planet

Pink Floyd- A Saucer full Of Secrets

Space Truckin and Highway Star by Deep Purple

I didn’t think they had a video for this one, but what do ya know?

Mr. Spock by Nerf Herder.

And then there’s the soothing sounds of Helios Creed. For example, “Busting Through the Van Allan Belt”.

Satellite of Love, by Lou Reed

Clouds Across the Moon, by Rah Band

Under the Milky Way, by The Church

Sleeping Satellite, by Tasmin Archer

Subterranean Homesick Alien, by Radiohead (link is a fan vid)

The Happening, by the Pixies

Earthrise and Lunar Sea by Camel

If sci-fi counts, there’s the “band” Ayreon. Each of their records are concept albums, all set in the same “sci-fi reality”.

There’s also the version by Voivod

Here’s an entire album of them–

Anything by Sun Ra. Hey, he’s from Saturn!
