Songs about "statutory rape" or underage love?

Because maybe “pedophile” is too strong a word.

The organizational part of my mind does things like this constantly. I’ll hear a song, and immediately try to think of songs with similar themes. As luck would have it, today I heard My Sharona.

So I’m trying to compile a list of songs that broach the subject. So far, I’ve thought of:

“My Sharona” by The Knack
“Aqualung” by Jethro Tull
“Young Girl” by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap
“Don’t Stand So Close to Me” by The Police
“Seventeen” by Winger
“Wait for You” by Bonham

I’m sure there are more that I’m just not thinking of.

“Stray Cat Blues”, Rolling Stones. She’s 15 on the studio recording, only 13 on the live one.

Little Girls - Oingo Boingo

“Edge of Seventeen” - Stevie Nicks

“Into the Night” - Benny Mardones

Sweet Sixteen by Iggy Pop.

In fact there seem to be a lot of “Sixteen” songs, from Neil Sedaka to Billy Idol. But Iggy’s the only one I like so I’m just going to mention him  .

Of course, some of these may or may not be “underage love”. In some places 16 is legal. And in some cases the singer is supposed to be the same age.

On the other hand there’s “Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon” which definatly says she’s (too) young and he’s old.

Or if you want to head right into pedophila hell, “Jordan, Minnasotta” by Big Black and “Stupid Child” by the Swans.

“Little Queenie”

+1 for “Stray Cat Blues”

Somewhere in that song"little queenie' don't it say "too damn cute to be a minute over 13? or was it 17?"

I think it was 17 – on the Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis versions, at least. Which puts it firmly in the “sweet sixteen” group of songs.

“Fourteen,” by the Vandals. They get points for the entire song being about how the singer can’t do anything yet, because she’s too young.

“Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” by Sonny Boy Williamson’s been covered by Van Morrison, the Grateful Dead and Jonny Lang.

There’s the 12 yr old hooker in Sublime’s The Wrong Way.

Christine Sixteen - KISS. I still shudder when I hear that talking section in the middle - “When I saw you coming out of school that day, I knew… I’ve got to have you!” The there’s the lyric which describes Christine as “young and clean”. It doesn’t get worse than that, surely.

From the Tiger Lillies:
Bad
Rapist

Oingo Boingo’s that was mentioned above

The Yellow Monkey’s Mishite Mishite (No actual ages mentioned, but probably)

Mexicali Blues by the Grateful Dead (well, just a reference)

Showing my age here, but “Let’s Break The Law”, by Zodiac Mindwarp.

Two songs came to mind for me:

“Only Sixteen” by Dr. Hook

“Tonight’s the Night” by Rod Stewart - although some may disagree with me on this one. Technically there isn’t an age ascribed to the woman, but this stanza certainly implies an underage lover:

“Don’t say a word my virgin child
Just let your inhibitions run wild
The secret is about to unfold
Upstairs before the night’s too old”

I’m On Fire - Bruce Springsteen

At least that’s the impression I always got.

I’ve always felt Gilbert O’Sullivan’s Clair was about that… just a tad pedophilic.

For the other side of the coin…

“I Love Rock and Roll” by Joan Jett:

I saw him dancing there by the record machine
I knew he must have been about 17

Fiddle About by the Who from Tommy.

A very oldie: Down by the Old Mill Stream (“You were sixteen, my village queen”), though the love was supposed to be chaste.
