songs and writings of hope and peace

Yep, that’s what I’m looking for. Any suggestions? Chef Troy put a very interesting writing by Mark Twain up in MPSIMS. Anyone else have anything relevant, either song or spoken word, that they feel applies to current events? I’m trying to gather some stuff together for a group sing-along/reading session tonight at 7. Thanks!

Imagine
John Lennon

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

hey, there’s a quote I’ve always liked from the book “West With the Night” by Beryl Markham. To be it has always been a reminder not to fear the future.

“I have learned that if you must leave a place that you have lived in and loved and where all your yesterdays are buried deep—leave it any way except a slow way, leave it the fastest way you can. Never turn back and never believe that an hour you remember is a better hour because it is dead. Passed years seem safe ones, vanquished one, while the future lives in a cloud, formidable from a distance. The cloud clears as you enter it. I have learned this but, like everyone, I learned it late.”
And this verse from the Lord of the Rings, this is from the song Sam sings to himself while he is wandering, very frightened in Mordor trying to find Frodo. Actually, it always gives me chills.
Though here at journey’s end I lie,
in darkness buried deep.
Beyond all towers strong and high
beyond all mountains steep
Above all shadow rides the sun,
and stars forever dwell
I will not say the day is done,
nor bid the stars farewell.
