Songs for friends

In a few weeks, I’m going to be leaving the UK to return to NZ after 12 years. Before I go, I want to record something for a really special friend as a way of saying “thank you” - I don’t think she realises how important her friendship has been over the last few months, particularly. And to be clear, this really is just someone who has been a friend.

The obvious candidate is “thank you for being a friend” - the sentiment is correct but I find it a bit cloying. My other option is “with a little help from my friends”, but the sentiment isn’t as good a fit, although I can work it with the words.

So I’m looking for ideas for songs that fit - it has to be something that lends itself to an acoustic arrangement, but have at it:

Queen immediately comes to mind: “You’re my best friend.”

“You’ve Got a Friend”, written by Carole King, popularized by James Taylor.

mmm

Sadly I have discounted both the above (nice songs though they are)

You’re My Best Friend is clearly an expression to a lover/partner - I might sing it to my wife, but not to my friend (who as I noted in the OP, is just a friend).

You’ve Got A Friend also does not work - it is a song that expresses that the singer will be there as a friend for someone who needs it. I want to indicate that I have appreciated the friendship that my friend has offered.

Am I being awkward? I have had a good look, and have covered the mainstream songs about friendship. I’m hoping someone will have something maybe a little off the beaten track that is a bit more focussed.

Perhaps ABBA’s “The Way Old Friends Do” would work? It’s sentimental but not as cloying as “Thank You For Being A Friend.”

Chet Baker: “My Buddy”.

Elton John:Friends

‘Old Friends’ - Simon & Garfunkle

‘Lean on me’ - Bill Withers

‘With a little help from my friends’ - Beatles

‘I’ll be there’ - Jacksons

‘That’s what friends are for’ - Deniece Williams

Fill to Me the Parting Glass

Good night and joy be with you all.

Randy Newman - “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”

Pete Seeger/Woody Guthrie: "So Long, It’s Been Good To Know Ya"

Beatles: “In My Life”

It was horribly overplayed in the late '00s but “For Good” from Wicked is pretty much all about the significance of a strong friendship.

I kind of like Eels “You’re My Friend” but it’s not to everyone’s taste.

"Amigos Para Siempre "?

Bridge Over Troubled Water

The lyrics look pretty good, but I’m unable to hear the darn thing from Youtube. I like the Eels other stuff, though, so it might be a possibility.
