songs that are almost perfect...but not quite

Some songs are very good, but if they were just a little bit different would be perfect; in our estimation, of course.

I may think of more, but the songs that come immediately to my mind are:

  • " Get it Faster" by Jimmy Eat World. This is easily my favorite song on the cd, but I don’t care for the first minute of the song before the singing starts. I usually fast forward through the intro. I wish they’d shortened the into by at least 2/3rds.

  • “Emma J” by Brendan Benson(from the ** Zero Effect** soundtrack). It’s a very pretty song, except for one stanza before the chorus where he changes which key he’s singing in. Had the singing been the same throughout the song would be even better.

Which songs would you change slightly to impove them, and what would you change?

Every version of Killing Me Softly.

I feel that each one has missed something either via vocal interpretation or by the arrangement and instruments.

Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” is a truly virtuoso vocal performance which is marred by an amateurish and just plain sucky guitar solo. I long for a lead guitar performance on that song which is commensurate with the performance by the singer.

I always thought the laughing at the end of Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’ was cheesey, while the song is otherwise excellent.

Doesn’t that describe all of Metallica’s old stuff?
