Songs that get you amped

Shakira’s “Ojos Asi” gets my energy. It’s the type of song that brings me to move my hips.

Whether or not you actually want to shake 'em may be a totally different thing altogether.

Hammer- Pumps and a Bump

Ludacris- Roll Out

P Diddy- Benjamins

Alot of Rap and Heavy Metal works for me but since we are talking about working out Techno also works I’ll think of some more later.

Okay, everybody. Thank you for reminding me how clueless I am about today’s music. Guess it’s a sign I’m a little behind in the times when I have Siouxsie and the Banshees on my most recent “new music” compilation. But I’ll check as many of your suggestions out as possible.

Coupla mentions to make about your advice: First, Jimmy Chitwood, that’s another great shot (so to speak) with ACDC. In going back over previous tapes/CD’s/mini discs, each one has an ACDC cut on it. And it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who was hip to “Ballroom Blitz” before it got put on that car commercial.

I’ve listed a few songs that I relied on in the past to get through that last set of incline bench press – omitting the ones that I’m too embarrassed to acknowledge, though.

Paradise City – Guns n’ Roses
Gallows Pole – Page n’ Plant, live
You Better Run – Pink Floyd
I Just Wanna Make Love to You – Foghat
Detroit Rock City – Kiss
Shoot to Thrill – ACDC
I Love Rock n’ Roll – Joan Jett
Cannonball – (that girl group from the early 90’s, don’t remember the name)
I Want You to Want Me – Cheap Trick (live version)
Ride of the Valkries – Wagner
Ballroom Blitz – Sweet (I’ve been into this song since I was 10!)
Black Betty – (early 70’s song, don’t know the band)
Let it Go – Def Leppard
Slow n’ Easy – Whitesnake
Bat out of Hell - Meatloaf
Let’s Go Crazy - Prince
Falling in Love - Scorpions (from Animal Magnetism, woo! woo! woo!)
No You Don’t - Pat Benatar
Whaddya do for Money Honey - ACDC
Thunderstruck - ACDC
Rock n’ Roll Fantasy - Bad Company
Same Thrill - Scorpions
Born to be Alive - Patrick Hernandez (okay, that’s one I’m embarrassed about)
2 Legit 2 Quit - Hammer (remember him?)
Black Cat - Janet Jackson (remember her?)

I’m going to borrow songs from my own running CDs, although most of the songs I picked are there not so much for amping me up as keeping me going at a steady rate.

-“It’s a Fine Day” by the Barcode Brothers. All three mixes.
-“The Sun and the Rainfall”, a remix of the DePeche Mode song by Element, on the Trancemode CD.
-“Discoteque”, a remix of the U2 song that’s on Pure Dance 1998. This one is really good for that part of the workout when you feel like you just can’t go on anymore.
-“Push the Feeling On” by the Nightcrawlers. The title says it all.
-“Grace & Glory” by Hideki Naganuma, off the Jet Set Radio Future (video game) soundtrack. If the creepy opening vocals don’t amp you up, I don’t know what will.
-“In a Big Country” by Big Country
-“These Precious Things” (live) by Tori Amos

With the exception of the last two, all of the above recs are house, techno, or trance.

well, since i’m fairly ancient, most of my “get groovin’” songs all come from the Classic Rock aisle (although i heartily endorse “Ride of the Valkyries”, plus “Immigrant Song”. sense a theme here? )

perhaps that should give these songs extra points, if they can still get my decrepit frame a-movin’

“Devil In a Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly” medley /Mitch Ryder and Detroit Wheels
“Free Ride”/Edgar Winter Group
“Spirit in the Sky”/Norman Greenbaum
“Rock and Roll”/Led Zeppelin (ignore the car commercial overkill)
“Down on the Corner”/Creedance Clearwater Revival
i did say i was hopelessly over the hill, didn’t i?

I would second Moonchild’s injection of classic cheeseball hard rock and metal into any good workout mix. . . something about the mindless high velocity pushes you like nothing else. Thus I give you-

“Stand Up and Shout” by Dio
“Screaming for Vengenace,” Judas Priest
“Bastard,” Motley Crue
“Burning Wheels,” Saxon
“If You Want Blood,” AC/DC
“Fireball,” Deep Purple
“Death Alley Driver,” Rainbow
“Armed and Ready,” Michael Schenker
“Helldorado,” WASP
"Freak," Bruce Dickinson
“Attitude,” Metallica

“The Sad Punk” by the Pixies, off the album Trompe le Monde. Sure, it’s got a brief slow-ish break in the middle, but once you’ve heard it a few times and know what’s coming, that break is ALL tension.

Lots of great stuff - but for me, there is only one clear winner and Moody Bastard’s already named it:

If You Want Blood by AC/DC - it just doesn’t get any better. I listened to that song before every test in college and grad school to get pumped up. I also remember Anthony LaPaglia in Empire Records, as the owner of the shop, getting behind a kit in his office, putting that song on and rocking out when he needed to check out for a bit.
