Songs that give you chills

“The Man Comes Around”; Johnny Cash.

Oh absolutely! I’ll add two country songs, although I’m not much of a country listener. Both by Garth Brooks, whom, otherwise, I can’t stand.

Ireland. The line, “Just a look to say goodbye.” That moment of fatalism always gets me.

The Thunder Rolls, not the radio version one normally hears, but the live version with the ‘extra’ verse. The crowd goes wild as he goes into the last verse, the one that makes the song, to me, a lot more poigniant. Doesn’t hurt that I love the sound of thunderstorms.

**1952 Vincent Black Lightning ** by Richard Thompson

And he gave her one last kiss and died
And her gave her his Vincent to ride…

Arghhh! I’ve been trying to think of the name/ and words to this song all day since i saw this post! The song was originally made by someone else but covered later, much late ron by Pearl Jam…I believe…about getting into a car accident…and his girlfriend dies. If anyone can remember the name of this song I’d love to know. The only other thing I remember about it was the lyrics had something to do with it raining that night…driving a car…and getting into an accident. This urks the crap out of me when I can’t remember something so simple as an old song…Oh well

Heh, when I got out of my car this afternoon, it was in the middle of “Embassy Lament” (which is far and away the weakest song of the show, and I almost always skip). You know I’ll remember your post tomorrow morning when I head to work and “Anthem” is the first thing I hear.

Creepy Chills: Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight"

Gushy Chills: (already mentioned by WhyNot) the "1000 Kisses (Reprise) from Rent. Jesse Martin is just too good. And when big-voiced-soulful-black-lady-ensemble-member joins in at the end, no chance.

It’s called Last Kiss originally recorded by J. Frank Wilson And The Cavaliers. You can find the lyrics here: http://www.songfacts.com/detail.lasso?id=1275

I’ll definitely second Friar Ted’s selection of “Some Velvet Morning” (the Nancy Sinatra / Lee Hazelwood version of course).

Ironically, it was about a month ago your selection was the song that most recently earned it’s own pit thread:
Zebra’s Quit playing that fucking song now, or…

Right about that same time was a similarly themed CS thread:
honeydewgrrl’s Goosebump-inspiring music

A classic 70s song, How Much I Feel, by Ambrosia. Especially the last verse.

Warren Zevon- Life ‘ll kill ya’

Rufus Wainright’s version of “Halleluja”

Reba McIntyre “I Think His Name Was John”
Sinade O’Connor- “Nothing Compares to You”

The Ledge by The Replacements

" I’m the boy, for the laaa-st time in my life"

<<shudder>>

Diamonds are Forever theme by Shirley Bassey
My Immortal by Evanescence
Any slow song from Lara Fabian’s eponymous album

I’ve always been deeply moved by Duran Duran’s “Rio.”

My friend was diagnosed with a primary brain cancer today. I’m not sure if I should be listening to the “chills” songs or the uplifting songs. I don’t think either one is going to help, unfortunately.

Well, I’m listening to the “chills” songs. No particular order.

“The Bewlay Brothers” – Bowie (Hunky Dory)
“Samba Pa Ti” – Santana (Abraxas)
“Eclipse” (still does it, after all this time) – Pink Floyd (DSotM)
“Hallelujah” – Jeff Buckley (Grace)
“Origin of Love” and “Wicked Little Town” – Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Movie Soundtrack)
“The Mercy Seat” – Johnny Cash (the original by Nick Cave doesn’t do it as much)
“The Weeping Song” – Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (I love the one from Live Seeds)
“The Lie and How We Told It” – Yo La Tengo (I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One)
“Longing” – Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Michael Brook (Night Song)
“Mercy Seat” – Peter Gabriel (So)
“Blood of Eden” – Peter Gabriel (Us)
“Glory Box” – Portishead
“Title and Registration” – Death Cab for Cutie
“No Surprises” – Radiohead
A lot of Sigur Ros especially “Staralfur” off of Agaetis Byrjun
“Wild Horses” – The Stones
“Cocoon” – Bjork (Vespertine)
“Did I Say” – Teenage Fanclub
“…sudden stars” – Stereolab (written for Mary, who was killed before Margerine Eclipse was recorded, especially with Laetitia singing backup like Mary and the refrain “If you must go, go”)
“Uphi Umhlobo” – Ladysmith Black Mambazo
The Beethoven violin concerto and Bach cello preludes
Raag Rageshri as performed on Indian Radio by Shahid Parvez (kind of an obscure pick, I suppose)
Cheesy pick – “Over the Rainbow” by Iz, the #1 hipster funeral song.
Some Hebrew songs about war and post traumatic stress.

and of course the most gut-wrenching song of all time, “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” by The Pogues off of Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash.

Another vote for Warren Zevon’s version of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”.
Sinead O’Connor’s “3 Babies”
Cowboy Junkies “Common Disaster”
Pink Floyd “Careful With That Axe Eugene”
Leonard Cohen “The Partisan” and “Who By Fire”
John Lennon “Imagine”
Simon and Garfunkel “Bridge Over Troubled Water”
Cindy Lauper “Time After Time”
Jeff Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah”
Tom Waits “Tom Traubert’s Blues”
Sundays “Wild Horses”
Bruce Springsteen “41 Shots (American Skin)” and “Atlantic City”
Neil Young “Ohio”
Patty Scialfa “Mexico”
Eva Cassidy’s version of “Songbird”

Brief Hijack- edwino, I’d be interested in those Hebrew songs you mentioned. I’d like to find none-liturgical Hebrew music to listen to, Can you make some recommendations?- Highjack ends

I came in to post that one.
While I’m here,

That Crosby Stills & Nash song, I don’t know the name:

I was standing on the grave
of a soldier that died
in 1799.
And the day he died it was a birthday;
And I noticed it was mine.
And my head didn’t know just who I was
And I went spinning back in time
And I am high, upon the altar

Well, I felt quite moved the first time I heard KD Lang’s rendition of Cole Porter’s song “So In Love”. It was part of some kind of AIDS awareness special on TV in the early 90s called “Red Hot and Blue” (which soundtrack I now have), and the love song becomes transformed into a mourning song for a dead lover.

So taunt me, and hurt me
Deceive me, desert me
I’m yours 'til I die
So in love with you, my love, am I

Ave Maria
Samuel Barbers “Adagio for Strings”

Getting away from this world : Ratcat, it ends with NASAs mission control broadcast of the challenger explosion.

Behind Blue Eyes: The Who version, not the recent remake

Touch of Reality: Sasha Arnkoff, got this off the Eva-R website, you can really hear the sadness in her voice whilst she is singing.

Goodnight Moon: Shivaree- theres just something about her voice that really gets to me.

Bang, Bang (My baby shot me down): Nancy Sinatra

The Golden Path: Chemical Brothers

Ballad for dead friends: Dashboard Prophets

Red Right Hand: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
from Nick Caves Murder Ballads CD:
Where the Wild Roses Grow
Song of Joy
Henry Lee
Kindness of strangers

People on this board like to hate it, and I understand why, but there’s The Sound of Silence.

John Oswald’s Plunderphonic version of Over the Rainbow gives me chills. Same with what he does to the Beatles’ Blue Jay Way.

A lot of Radiohead; somebody mentioned No Surprises, but I think How to Disappear Completely is up there too. And Climbing Up the Walls is equally chilling, but in a different way.

Oh, I’m also frequently chilled by an obscure Radiohead song called Man O War (or Big Boots). It’s kind of a pain in the ass because they never managed to record the damn thing.
