What Songs Make You Cry?

Which songs make you cry?

There can be a story, but I am more looking for songs that just make you choke up from some quality in the music, vocals, whatever…
Here’s a partial list for me (I cry pretty easily)

Superstar - The Carpenters
Cool Blue Reason - Cake
Do You Realize? - The Flaming Lips
Love is Blue - I’m not sure about the artist, but it is an instrumental and French
The Night Chicago Died - Again, I don’t know the artist, and maybe that’s not even the title
After the Gold Rush - Neil Young, the whole album
One Foot in the Grave -Beck, the whole album
Killing Me Softly -Roberta Flack

To Where You Are - Josh Groban. Gets me every time.

And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - Eric Bogle (and others)
Willie McTell - Eric Bogle
The Dakota - Christine Lavin
Cold Missouri Waters - Cry,Cry,Cry
Amazing Grace
Jack and Lucy - Deliah Bell & Bill Grant
Where’ve You Been?- Kathy Mattea
I’m Hog-Tied Over You - Tennessee Ernie Ford & Ella Mae Morse

anything by EMINEM

She’s leaving home- The Beatles

Whats the matter here- 10,000 Maniacs

Amor Eterno- Juan Gabriel

Alone Again Naturally – Gilbert O’Sullivan
If – Bread

There’s only one song that makes me cry: Der Weg - Herbert Groenemeyer

It’s a love song to his wife he lost to cancer four years ago…
Here’s the English translation to the lyrics.

“Try to Remember that kind of September.”

No wonder the Fantastics closed December 2001. Try singing that song every night after 9/11. Indeed, it will never mean the same thing again.

“Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton
“Long Long Time” by Linda Ronstadt
“Something’s Always Wrong” by Toad the Wet Sprocket
“Crazy” by Patsy Cline

“Watching TV”, Roger Waters – not the song itself really, but the part in the middle that samples Waiting for Our Executioners. I do just fine until the crying Chinese girl says “Long live the Republic!”

Not sure why but Going to California by Led Zeppelin often gets me going when Robert Plant declares, “It’s not as hard, hard, hard as it seems.” I guess they’re more tears of hope than sadness.

I forgot “Once Upon A Time”

I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt. I first heard it as I was breaking up with a guy, in the same situation as the singer of the song.

I cry every time I hear it even now, 12 years later. And yes, I am over him, but still…

Get Blown Away by Ocean Colour Scene

It’s not the lyrics as such, but the guitar in the song really gets me…and one of the lines

“…and I loved her for a second…”

That, and I will second

**And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda **

Although not the version already mentioned, the one I know is sung by

Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners

Before the Dawn - Judas Priest

Just about every song on Zakk Wylde’s Book of Shadows.

Who Are You by Tom Waits. It’s hard to explain from just the lyrics; they seem too surreal to be all that sad. But when he sings them I often find myself crying, for the sheer pain in his voice.

“the good stuff” kenny chesney
that song just gets to ya. after listening to it i get goose bumps and just start sobbing because its so close to the heart.
“im already there” lonestar - ooh… so touching!

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to snicker at that…

For personal reasons, “Starting Over Again” by Natalie Cole.

Thirding And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda, especially when I hear it on ANZAC or Armistace Day.

Goosebumps and a very snotty nose are assured.
