There are far too many songs for me to list, for I am very emotional. I have been known to tear up during certain commercials.
However the one that gets me every time is Randy Travis’ Three Wooden Crosses. Heathen that I am, I cannot listen to it without blubbering like a baby.
" What I did for love" from Chorus Line and “Explain it to my heart” from Chicago. Both reminders of an extremely painful and completely incomprehensible breakup (dropped at about the average speed of an F-14). Been years, but hearing either one makes me want to go into a dark room, assume the fetal position and cry until I’m officially diagnosed as medically dehydrated.
A little known song bt Stan Rogers. “The Last Watch”.
The song in question is “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda”. Not “Waltzing Matilda”.
Another Australian contribution “Wrinkles”. Sentimental mush, but a fair tearjerker.
Danny Boy
Alone Again, Naturally
Amazing Grace (on the pipes)
several of those already mentioned
Over the Rainbow (not every version, but one I heard the Wooten Brothers do at a wedding reception)
and every now and then
When You Wish Upon a Star – reminds me of how hopeful I was as a child. I cry for that lost innocence.
Without a doubt. I don’t know if any of you Dopers attended the University of Arizona in the early 90’s, but there used to be this guy who would practice his bagpipes in the evening on the Mall area in the middle of campus. Something about hearing that song on the pipes, ringing throughout the Mall which was bathed in the erie yellow light of street lamps at night… really sad…
Also, I teared up a little when I first heard Ray Lamontagne’s “Burn”:
I’ll Think Of Something - Mark Chesnutt
Beloved Wife as performed by Natalie Merchant is just gut-wrenchingly sad.
In another vein, although I can’t find a good recording of it, (you can listen to a bit of it at last.fm here), Gracie by Ben Folds. Weeping. Every single time.
I’m embarrassed to admit that this song gets me too, makes me bawl like an atheist baby.
That wasn’t so sad. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I seem to have something in my eye
Marianne Faithfull’s The Ballad of Lucy Jordan.
Aria de Mezzo Carattere - Final Fantasy 3a VIj Opera Scene. I’m not going to link to the game video, because if you haven’t played the game, then the ancient sprites and music won’t make sense. But I bawl every time I get to that scene in the game.
Here is an orchestra rendition of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NC45S948ss&feature=related .
This is my favorite rendition of “The Old Man.”
Here’s another gut-wrenching song . . . “Christmas 1915”
Lovely song, I do believe it’s full title is A Silent Night (Christmas 1915) and I think I prefer the original version. My dad loved the song, but it really should have been Christmas 1914 surely?
For related reasons: “Photograph”, by Ringo Starr. He did it at the “Concert for George”, and the words took on a new meaning. I can’t hear it now without thinking of that.
