Songs that make you cry

Loreena McKennitt, “Skellig”
Dan Fogelberg, “Run for the Roses”
C. W. McCall, “Roses for Mama”
Alan Parsons Project, “The Same Old Sun”
Billy Joel, “And So It Goes” and “Lullaby”
Rush, “Losing It”

Well, I had forgotten about C.W. McCall. He did a song that I can’t recall the name of, which does bring me to tears. Unless I am confusing that unnamed song with “Teddy Bear” by Red Sovine. Which is entirely possible, they both were about truckers.

That wasn’t overly clear, was it?

Imagine - John Lennon. The irony gets me in the gut every time.

Anyone else know of “Old and Wise” by The Alan Parson’s Project, Eye in the Sky album?

“And someday in the mist of time
When they asked me if I knew you
I’d smile and say you were a friend of mine
And the sadness would be lifted from my eyes
When I’m old and wise”

And on a similar vein, Old Friends by Simon and Garfunkle…

Right now, anything by the Neville Brothers.

Seeing this made me realize that I completely forgot the song “Mama, A Rainbow” from the show Minnie’s Boys. Another one that I can hear but not sing without crying, about a young man who is broke and can’t afford to buy his mother a birthday present. The first few verses are about things that aren’t big or good enough for her (a rainbow, a sunrise, a palace), and I get through those ok, but I lose it at the end every time:

What can I give you
That I can give you
What will your present be?
Mama, young and beautiful
Always young and beautiful
That’s the mama I’ll always see
That’s for mama, with love, from me
Hell, just typing the words has me tearing up! (And you should see my mom when I sing it to her. ;))

I’ve requested for that & “Nights in White Satin” by the Moody Blues to be played at my funeral.

(which isn’t an immediate concern but when it happens years & years from now, I want those played)

Angels in Waiting by Tammy Cochran. A country song about a girl whose 2 brothers are dying a slow and painful death.

“One Tin Soldier” + Kythereia = big melting puddle of tears and sobbing. Seriously.

Hopefully, you’ve told someone besides us.

Watching Scotty Grow

Honey:
See the tree
How big it’s grown…

Gene Autry singing The Last Round-Up.

At Last (my love has come along!)

Etta James

Have you heard the Moby version (with Laura Dawn vocals)? I think it’s gorgeous.

Feydeau, are you thinking of “Convoy,” perhaps? Complete WAG.

The Little Girl by John Michael Montgomery gets me every time, so does Concrete Angel by Martina McBride.

Nope. The one I’m thinking of had something to do with a ghost trucker – “Phantom 309” (or some similar numbers – I think it was a 3-digit number…) – it’s just that seeing McCall’s name made me remember trucker songs, which led to “Teddy Bear” which led to this song that I can’t fully recall.

I guess I’m the only one to notice obscure songs from movies that weren’t hits.
“Love Lives On” from Harry and the Hendersons;
“Dance With Life” from Phenomenon;
“COLE’S SONG” from Mr. Holland’s Opus
The last song especially, which is sung and cowritten by Julian Lennon and seems to be a tribute to his father John.

It’s a Red Sovine song, Phantom 309.

[Warning - pop ups. Even if Firefox, dammit.]

I’m not a big Neil Diamond fan, but I always cry when I hear “The Story of My Life” and “America”.

I once burst into tears over Black Sabbath’s “Electric Funereal”
It’s not exactly a sad song, but I’d been thinking about my ex, who’d passed away. (We’d stayed good friends.) Hearing that song reminded me of the time we got into a song war at our favorite greasy spoon - him playing “Rock Island Line” by Johnny Cash and me with Sabbath. The owner finally pulled the plug on the jukebox after about the sixth play each. We were laughing our butts off.

So, hearing that song… :frowning:
