Alright.
(This is pretty much my first post ever so hopefully it is okay.)
You have the gun/rope/sleeping pills ready. There’s one last thing you must do before you take your own life:
Decide which song to play as you do the deed.
My #1 choice is Tom Petty’s Free Falling.
Gonna free fall out into nothin’
Gonna leave this world for a while
Isn’t that peaceful and perfect?
What is your suicide song?
“No Depression” - Uncle Tupelo version
“I’ve Had Enough” - The Who
“I Can See Clearly Now” - Johnny Nash or Holly Cole Trio versions
“Waterlow” - Mott the Hoople
“Here Comes The Flood” - Peter Gabriel
“Land Of The Sun” - Skip Spence
“Destroying Angel (White Mushrooms)” - Pulnoc
“Welcome Back Home” - The Byrds
“Free” - Train
“Trouble Man” - Marvin Gaye
“Eleanor Rigby” The Beatles or Ray Charles versions
“Misunderstood” - Wilco
“Lazy Old Sun” - The Kinks
“End Of The Season” - The Kinks
“Demon” - Keith Richards
“Drive On” - Johnny Cash
“When I Get My Wings” - Billy Joe Shaver
“Bank Vault In Heaven” - Richard Thompson
“Suicide Chump” - Frank Zappa (just for the irony)
“Key To The Highway” any of countless versions
This list was too easy, good thing I took my pills today…
Billie Holiday had a song called “Blue Monday” IMS, that is supposed to be a real downer. Several cases of suicide were attributed to it, back in the 40’s or 50’s. Sorry, no cite. Anyone got the SD on this, or is this just another urban legend?
It really depends on the type of suicide.
‘‘Jingle Bell Rock’’ on vinyl - Hanging
‘‘I touch myself’’ or “Love Hurts” - Autoerotic strangulation
‘‘Jump!’’ on headphones - Off a building or bridge.
‘‘Say Goodnight (the party’s over)’’- pills and booze
‘’(you drive me) Crazy’’ by Britney Spears.- Stumbling out onto a poorly lit freeway on a friday night, bottle of Jack in one hand and a revolver in the other. Climax ensues by blowing head off one half second before a car hits you while staring at the unfortunate driver. The aforementioned scenarios are in no way a description of past events or intended as inspiration for a psychotically mirthful or ironic demise. I just have a dark imagination.
Anything Depeche Mode for extended period of time would do me in, eventually.
I don’t know what it is about Depeche Mode that makes me progressively sad, bored and angry all at the same time. Even on a normal and sober day any of his songs will turn my mood way south for a few hours. Dave Gahan, if you are out there, I will one day spend fifty bucks on a ticket so that I may jump stage and give you a swift, steel-toed kick to the shin and another to the groin…sorry about that diatribe there…
As an aside, I never listen to DM voluntarily, I just have a friend who thinks he is greatest man ever to walk the earth. He subjects me to that crap and tries to change my mind about that crappy band. Funny thing is, we met at work on a smoke break when he overheard me saying my feelings on the band.
