Songs to Stalk By

#1 Crush, by Garbage. This was the creepy song from the “Romeo and Juliet” remake.

Skatanic[ by Reel Big Fish is another.

"Watchin’ you sleep,
i’m lookin’in your window,
everyday i drive past your house

standin’ in your front yard,
why don’t you come out?

watchin’ you sleep…nowhere to hide,
one of these days i’m gonna come inside"

Emotional Rescue- Rolling Stones:

*You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine
You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine…

Ain’t there nothin’ I can say, nothin’ I can do
To change your mind? I’m so in love with you!*

Or more obscurely, Shadow Boy by Scruffy the Cat:

Well I’m the one behind that tree
That shadow boy is only me

How about Shame by Stabbing Westward? The video even features a crazy stalker/killer.

I only see myself reflected in your eyes
So all that I believe I am essentially are lies
And everything I’ve hoped to be or ever thought I was
Died with your belief in me so who that hell am I?

[Chorus]
I don’t know if I’m real without you
What is left of me without you?
I don’t know what’s real without you
How can I exist without you?

I’m wondering 'round confused, wondering why I try
The more that you deny my pain, the more it intensifies
I pray for someone to ache for me the way I ache for you
If you ignore that I’m alive
I’ve nothing to cling to

I don’t know if I’m real without you
What is left of me without you?
I don’t know what’s real without you
How can I exist without you?

I stare in this mirror, so tired of this life
If only you would speak to me or cared if I’m alive
Once I swore I would die for you, but I never meant it like this
I never meant like this, no, I never meant like this

I don’t know if I’m real without you
What is left of me without you?
I don’t know what’s real without you
How can I exist without you?

How can I exist without you?

IIRC The Beatles “Run For Your Life”

Let this be a sermon
I mean every word I said
Baby I’m determined and I’d
Rather see you dead

Chorus
You better run for you life
If you can little girl
Hide your head in the sand little gir
Catch you with another man
That’s the end
Little girl

another verse
You know that I’m a wicked guy
and I was born with a jealous mind
And I can spend my whole life trying
Just to make you tow the line

“Peeping Tom” by Placebo.

I’m careful not to fall
I have to climb your wall
'Cause you’re the one
Who makes me feel much taller than you are
I’m just a peeping tom
On my own for far too long
Problems with the booze
Nothing left to lose

I’m weightless… I’m bare
I’m faithless… I’m scared

The face that fills the hole
That stole my broken soul
The one that makes me seem to feel much taller than you are
I’m just a peeping tom
On my own for far too long
Troubles with the gear
Nothing left to fear

With every bet I lost
And every trick I tossed
You’re still the one who makes me feel much taller than you are
I’m just a peeping tom
On my own for far too long
Problems with the booze
Nothing left to lose

Also check out their other songs. You can give many of them a certain stalker “twist”. (Am I in a band rut or what?)

Welcome, TexasDave!

Well, there’s Randy Travis’s “What’ll You Do About Me”, which contains the lyrics:
You can change your number, you can change your name, you can ride like hell on a midnight train… and What in the world are you planning to do, when a man comes over just to visit with you, and I’m on the porch with a two-by-two… (someone else covered this and changed it to “dinner for two”–the coward).

“Possession” was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read this thread title. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t that song about her stalker?

Well, you can always reply on the Toadies for some impressively creepy songs… Tyler and Possum Kingdom spring to mind. Sample lyrics:

*I can’t believe I’m really here, and she’s lying in that bed
I can almost feel her touch, and her anxious breath

I stumble in the hallway, against the bedroom door
I hear her call out to me, I hear the fear in her voice
She pulls the covers tighter, I press against the door

I will be with her tonight!*

::shiver::

Actually, it wasn’t about a particular guy who was actually stalking her. It was inspired by the many weird fan letters she was getting around the time she wrote the song (and was just becoming really famous.)

Burn me for mentioning this crappy band, but Def Leppard’s song that went “Walk away if you want to / It’s ok, if you need to / You can run, but you can never hide / From the shadow that’s creeping up beside you / There’s a magic running through your soul / But you can’t have it all”

But my favorite part was the chorus: “(Whatever you do) /
I’ll be two steps behind you / (Wherever you go)
/ And I’ll be there to remind you / That it only takes a minute of your precious time / To turn around and I’ll be two steps behind”

Creepy.

“Next Time You Fall in Love” from Starlight Express. Also counts as the stalker song with the worst lyrics.

I guess I’m not too good at keeping love alive for long.
I think I’ve found the answers, but the answer’s always wrong.
My first love was my true love and it should have been my last.
The only time I’m happy’s when I’m dreaming in the past.
Next time you fall in love, it better be with me the way it use to be.
Back then was when we touched the Starlight.

The classic stalker’s song, from the 1920s:

You say that you’re going away, you think that I’ll be lonely
Just as sad and blue as I can be?
I’ll say that you’re going away, just remember, only—
Don’t think you’ll ever get rid of me!

Where ever you go, what ever you do,
I want you to know, I’m following you.
What ever you climb, or tumble into,
Why, all of the time, I’m following you.

The battle won’t be half so hard if you’ve someone to share it,
I’d gladly carry half the load, and what’s more, grin and bear it.

You’re part of my heart, you know that it’s true—
When ever we part, I’m following you.
Oooh, lemme see if I can remember the lyrics to “Say That We’re Sweethearts Again,” an hilarious 1940s number about stalking and spousal abuse . . .

I’ve got three:

Maria by Blondie:
Oooh it makes you wanna’ cry
She doesn’t know your name and your heart beats like a subway train
Oooh it makes you wanna’ die
Oooh don’t you wanna’ take her?
Wanna’ make her all your own?
Maria
You’ve gotta see her
Go insane and out of your mind

Made worse by the fact that they were on the top of a rook in the video, with the Maria girl opposite them in another building…

**Nothing but the Best by Ian Gillan **
I see you on the same route every day
I climb on the bus even though it’s not going my way
As luck would have it I took a longer look today
And saw your brown eyes peeping up over your book

So Cold The Night - Communards
I watch your window
I shake so scared
Spying from my room
With nervous unrest
Night after night your fingers caressing
The skin that is so fair you slowly undress
Soon we will be together
Until then so cold the night
Soon we will be together
Until then so cold the night

I know that you know that I’m here each night
Watching and praying the time is now right
For me to undress and caress you
Until then I’ll just sit here and dream.

**The Police, Can’t Stand Losing You **

*I’ve called you so many times today
And I guess it’s all true what your girlfriends say
That you don’t ever want to see me again
And your brother’s gonna kill me and he’s six feet ten
I guess you’d call it cowardice
But I’m not prepared to go on like this

I can’t, I can’t
I can’t stand losing
I can’t stand losing you

I see you’ve sent my letters back
And my LP records and they’re all scratched
I can’t see the point in another day
When nobody listens to a word I say
You can call it lack of confidence
But to carry on living doesn’t make no sense

I can’t, I can’t
I can’t stand losing

I guess this is our last goodbye
And you don’t care so I won’t cry
But you’ll be sorry when I’m dead
And all this guilt will be on your head
I guess you’d call it suicide
But I’m too full to swallow my pride

Chorus*

The song’s lyrics are unbelievably disturbing (My college roomate had a girlfriend who committed suicide after he broke up with her). Yet I love the song, it’s actually pretty upbeat. But I think it qualifies as a stalker song.

I seem to remember hearing that some of the lyrics were taken directly from those letters.

How 'bout Just My Imagination by The temptations, I believe. (Later covered by the Rolling Stones.) Guy sees woman, fantasizes about her, creepily (and unilaterally) determines that he will marry her and have children with her…

*Soon we’ll be married and raise a family
Two boys for you, two girls for me
I’m just a fella with a one-track mind
Whatever it is I want, I seek and I shall find

But it was just my imagination…
Running away with me…*

Believe it or not, she was actually sued by an obsessed fan who claimed she’s stolen the idea from him; he wanted some Godawful sum of money. This may be what you recall; the suit was unsuccessful, so I don’t think she swiped anything directly.

Of course, she’s been accused of swiping ideas from others before, and for the last few years has mostly just been rehashing her own stuff, so hey, you never know. I’m on record on the SDMB as saying she’s a talentless hack so I’ll leave it at that.

I can’t believe I forgot this one, but another GREAT stalking song is The Barenaked Ladies’ “Straw Hat and Dirty Old Hank,” a song about a guy obsessed with an actress or a singer, which actually ends with the guy showing up at her door with a gun!

Well, this one was intended for comic effect, but it fits, kinda: Brad Paisley’s “It Never Woulda Worked Out Anyway.” It’s about this guy who’s in love with this girl who won’t go out with him, so he wrecks all her other relationships in hopes that she’ll finally go out with him.

Excerpt:
Like the time I told that cowboy that you used to be a man
And the doctor you were datin’ that you hide your wedding band
Even if I am responsible for scaring them away
Well, you really ought to thank me
I was doing you a favor
'Cause it never woulda worked out anyway

Yeah it’s all because I love you
And I’m always thinking of you…
Plus, it never woulda worked out anyway

I nominate “The Ballad of Chasey Lane” by the Bloodhound Gang, and a number of the songs on the Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’ album “Murder Ballads” for extra creepy sauce.
