Paul Simon 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover
Requiring only a small assumption:
Left standing in the lurch
At a church were people saying,
My God, that’s tough
She stood him up
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
I’m probably in a set consisting of one, but I’ve always found the following couplet from Public Image Ltd’s Flowers of Romance to be the most efficient ever written to signal one person’s lack of love for another:
I bought you flowers
You wanted chocolates instead
the song also ends with a pair of lines which equally efficiently encapsulate ennui, defeat and disillusionment:
I’ll take the furniture
Start all over again
The rest of the lyrics are pretty opaque though.
Are you saying you don’t know who Bobby Womack was? Or that there are additional unknown writers and/or writers named “whoever they are”? Either way, surprising.
You’re All I Need - Mötley Crüe
It’s a joke, but it fits, and it’s even a got a good backstory:
Take These Chains From My Heart, Hank Williams
I don’t think this one counts - he was looking to leave his woman, but then discovered they had shared interests. One assumes that they had never talked to each before.
But he doesn’t leave her - he goes back to his wife to give it another try because of his daughter.
This song has been mentioned at least 3 times before this post, but does it really fit the criteria? It’s one person telling another person how to leave a relationship, not one person falling out of love with another.
Fairytale of New York by the Pogues
I have been told more than once by the English, usually on or about Christmastime, that this is a beautiful love song. Also, they aren’t breaking up or falling out of love.
I don’t think I’ve seen “If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot mentioned yet. Written while he was separating from his wife, it expresses the point of view of a guy who’s out of love, but wishes he wasn’t, but also can’t explain any of that. I’m in a happy marriage and it almost moves me to tears each time, the poor bastard.
The best song from The Beatles for the OP subject is “For No One”
Partial lyrics.
Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all the words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you
She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn’t feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!
If you include any breakup songs, you will list about half the songs that exist. If you want one where people just fall out of love, I would suggest
It’s Too Late by Carole King.
Christina Perri, “Jar of Hearts”: Jar of Hearts - YouTube
Missy Higgins, “Where I Stood”: Where I Stood - YouTube
Brad Paisley, “I’m Gonna Miss Her”: I'm Gonna Miss Her - YouTube
Toby Keith and Merle Haggard, “She Ain’t Hooked On Me”: She Ain't Hooked On Me No More - YouTube
Yet another that comes to mind: “Knowing Me, Knowing You” by ABBA.
Here Comes Goodbye by Rascal Flatts
Broken Dreams by Patti Austin
Her Town Too by James Taylor
I Heard it Through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye
We Are Never Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift
Neon Moon by Brooks & Dunn
Smoking Gun by The Robert Cray Band
Misunderstanding by Genesis
How Long by Ace
Any Day Now by Ronnie Milsap
Trying to Get the Feeling Again by Barry Manilow
This one is a beautiful song that may apply, but some of the lyrics are a bit confusing… “Thoigh you’re someone in this world that I’ll always choose to love, from now on you’re only someone that I used to love”. But the rest of the song makes it clear it’s over.
Someone That I Used to Love by Natalie Cole:
Since Send In The Clowns got mentioned already, and it’s a beautiful example of what the OP was looking for, here instead is a humorous song from Horton Heat about dealing with property division in the aftermath: Galaxy 500. http://www.metrolyrics.com/galaxy-500-lyrics-reverend-horton-heat.html
