I always loved the line “you better look before you leap; still waters run deep” from Rose Garden - takes a couple of cliches and twists them together into something more, and which rhyme and scan well. Really good pop songcraft.
Now he’s covered up with flowers in the back of a black limousine.
He’s one of the underrated songwriters of his generation.
I just heard “Games People Play” on the radio yesterday and found myself admiring this verse:
I’d heard the song plenty of times, but never really honed in on the lyrics.
