I’ve heard good things about it, and the ads are promising. Unfortunately, it’s on at the same time as both “House” and “Scrubs”. I’ll probably watch “Sons and Daughters”, record “Scrubs” and give House a miss this week. There’s always reruns.
I saw it compared to “Arrested Development” somewhere. If that’s true, I’ll probably like it. Then again, if “Sons and Daughters” is successful, after AD struggled for 3 years, I might be a little pissed (I know it’s irrational, but that’s the way my mind works.)
I watched about 10 minutes or so. Every shot was a close-up, which drove me crazy. The script seemed okay in a really low-key way; it’s not surprising they cast Wojo. I flipped back to it a few times. More friggin’ close-ups. I decided I was better off with Dirty Jobs. It was funnier.
Gotta say, I’m liking the show so far. We’ve got some character development even.
Last night’s shows;
Cameron’s son confides in Liz about a ‘personal’ problem that he has and it gets out to the whole family (roll down the windows!).
Whitey gets into it with a person of Asian ethnicity at the counter and gets fired for it after using racial slurs in the guys face (Wyoming = Wy Oh Ming).
Cameron borrows $1,500 from sis only to find out that sis borrowed the money from Mom to give to Cameron. (Now they’re both Mom’s bitches.)
Don sucks up the place during a play in which the whole family attends (where he gets mudered in the first three minutes (“The murder is General.”)).
Mom (mentally) undresses the bartender on ladies night out.
Jeff, who we believe to be in high school, brings home another hottie. This one has an 8 year old kid. She offered to give Gramps a private yoga lesson. Don’s jaw drops while checking out his sons new girl - (Cameron from the second week, “I’m calling the cops.”)
Jenna sucks as a Karaoke artist yet the whole family seems to think she’s awesome.
Cameron, “I’m not a dream squasher, I’m a pipe dream squasher!”
We’ve got it DVRed from last night, so we’ll watch it tonight. So far, we really like it. It’s a little slow in spots, but for the most part, I really like the natural feel to it.
I do have to admit - the one sister’s voice, the one who has dark hair, drives me BATTY. I can’t stand her voice at all.
I didn’t watch last night’s shows yet–cued up on the DVR–but I have seen all the previous episodes, and I’ve really been enjoying this show. I strongly recommend it, and I’m glad to see other folks are catching on too.
Odd that the original thread (this one) was bumped, in that last week it got its own thread.
Anyway, I’ve become a huge fan. I had set my VCR to tape both Scrubs episodes and planned to watch both Sons & Daughters. But I fell asleep on the couch around 8:30pm, woke up just before nine and thought: “I’m too tired. Something’s gotta go.” So I made the executive decision to tape Sons & Daughters and just skip Scrubs altogether.
After watching the tape early this morning, I felt vindicated. And Scrubs is my favorite sitcom! (Possibly of all time.) To choose anything over Scrubs is high praise indeed. At least from me.
My favorite bit:
“Nice back smile.”
“Nice hardwood floor. I didn’t expect that…”
I started the other thread, but this one has a more succinct title - so we’ll stay with this one. Glad you found it.
Me too, and I don’t think it’s the newness of the thing, there are other intangibles at work here.
Wasn’t there a “From all of me” stuck in there? Like she knew Whitey could see up her skirt…
And, what’s the deal with running two episodes back to back every Tuesday?
They have 13 episodes loaded, so does that mean they’ll shoot through the whole season in just 7 weeks?
hehheh, yeah, but it was after Cameron had called him out and they had been holding her skirt closed, so she was just acknowledging the fact that he was checking out her “hardwood floor.”
That was funny, but honestly, I think that I appreciated the “Wy-O-MING” from Whitey better. He’s such a schmuck. I have no idea how Jenna could have gotten involved w/ him. ::shrugs shoulders::
I also really enjoyed the whole interaction b/w the family member when it came to money. SO funny.
Finally, we get some clean drama in the series and some substantial character development. Not as funny as the other shows, but definitely up there as far as the average sitcom goes.
Cameron gets canned, mums has angina, and the girl with braces gets ALOT of face time in the camera (almost too much, but I think she has a cute personality) to the point that it’s hard to watch her talk because her braces are WAY out there. Wendal and mom get back together (we think) right after he gets hit on by a bartender and right after she has an episode. Don pricks up the place as usual (him and Sharon are made for each other).
I think the writers took the show in a different direction last night and are attempting to show off the possible flexibility of the writing/characters/humor, etc.
It seems as though the characters have a lot of fun acting in this series, sometimes you can see half smiles as they try to deliver their lines (probably reacting to an imprompt line, I would hope) kind of like what used to happen on the Carrol Burnett Show but not nearly as noticeable. This also makes the show more realistic (people sometimes smile under stress, but never on TV) when you have ranges of facial expressions that aren’t limited to what the writers initially (probably) intended.
I loved both episodes last night. There’s real humanity in this show, despite the flogging it received at the hands of the critics.
I flipped back and forth between the first episode and the new Scrubs, mostly focusing on S&D. I had wanted to check out that new Teachers show, but S&D pulled me in so I didn’t switch until the first commercial break. I actually think the Teachers show is probably a run of the mill sitcom, not great not terrible. But the contrast was brutal. Teachers was so nowhere near the league of S&D – or Scrubs – that I bailed after the one check-in. It’s not the laugh track; I dig other laugh-track sitcoms.
“So how’s your vagina?” hehheh.
After the hour was over I couldn’t remember any quotable lines, which was a shame because I had wanted to start a thread. Part of it was the switching back and forth (Scrubs is still excellent), but part of it was because neither of the episodes seem to have gone for the joke-a-minute approach.
I find myself caring for these people. Cameron is played to perfection. How did such a schmoe get that perfect wife? I’m smitten with her. Of course, his little sister is smokin’ as well, but in a more girly way. Amazing how you find yourself more attracted to women than girls as you get older, eh?
I loved the interplay between Cameron and Henry while he was clipping the hedges. And the scene with everyone in the bathroom, when Cameron spots Don peeking out, was pure gold.
I agree 100% about the brace-face. The 10 pounds of metal in her mouth is uber distracting, but damn if her personality doesn’t overcome it. I really felt for her when the hot sister told her “you’re not helping here” when her kid was in the ER.
Even better was the conversation between Cameron and braces:
“Did you ever have an aunt hate you because you made her son deaf for life?”
“No…but that’s really specific.”
