Sony PSP...Recommendations?

Can anyone recommend some good PSP games? We just got one and all we have is Lego Indiana Jones. I’m thinking of Grand Theft Liberty for me, but my son will need some games.

I’ve read good things about Daxter. Anyone played it?

Anyone like any PSP games at all?

God of War is awesome. If you liked the PS2 ones you will like this.

Ratchet and Clank was good.

Patapon is fun.

Puzzle Quest is good, although the companion powers don’t work. Didn’t matter to me, as they don’t affect gameplay much.

My son (age 10) loves Wipeout Pure.

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee is fun.

Lumines is loved by many, but I never got into it.

Jeanne d’Arc is an interesting game - a JRPG with strong tactical components to the battles.

Sid Meier’s Pirates is a great game on any platform.

Patapon really is awesome. There’s a 40K game that’s a decent enough, too.

If you like rhythmically timing your button presses and don’t mind the devastation of (very) very unhappy tribesmen after a crippling defeat, Patapon is for you. I swear that game hurt my feelings for about two weeks. Seriously it’s fun.

Namco Museum collections are great.

Thing is I use my PSP for so much more than games it’s really quite a deep console once you find space for it.

I agree about God Of War. Great fun and the graphics amazed me…
Puzzle Quest was fun.
Lego Star Wars is good.
Exit is a really well done puzzle game. Graphics wise it makes due with less. Which really works well.

Never really got into God of War…
But another recommendation for Jeanne D’Arc.

The Syphon Filter series- Dark Mirror, Logan’s Shadow- are PSP shooters that both got record reviews. Sadly, due to piss-poor marketing by Sony, nobody knows about them. They were the best games nobody ever played.

I worked on both of those, and yes, I’m bitter. Why do you ask?

What about more games for kids?

And also, anyone want to walk me through other things the PSP can do? I got it second hand and don’t have the manual and I haven’t poked around with it much.

Any accesories I must get?

There’s a game called WTF - Work Time Fun that’s a collection of weird, wacky, Japanese-y minigames.

Second the Hot Shots golf games.

No.
Oh, you mean, you already bought one?
Well, hopefully you can use yours more often than I use mine.

My son loves it. I hate it. Rather, I have no need to play videogames “on the go”.

To be clear, I own one, and I haven’t touched it in over a year, closer to two years*

  • That is, to actually play it. I let my cousin borrow it for a week, and I also made a Youtube video where I needed it for a prop.

I will go ahead and second this one. Lumines got the most play out of the games I do own for the PSP. I got into it, and I thought I was doing well until:

I would say, around level 7 or so, the background starts changing colors, and starts to move around, the entire screen just bounces around, keeping the puzzle grid still, however. Then, the background starts playing movies. Makes it real hard to make out the pieces at times.

I was not expecting that type of difficulty. You take it for granted, and Tetris would never pull such a trick. -Thankfully.

Anyone played Daxter? I keep reading reviews about how awesome it is, and I’d really like to get my kid a “kid-friendly” game to keep him occupied when…well, you know, when the wife and I are, ah, busy.

Pirates! - the classic Sid Meier game from the PC makes an almost 100% true jump to the PSP. It’s one of my faves that always makes it into the travel kit. I’ll get tired of it after playing it a few days straight, but always come back to it.

Wipeout Pulse/Pure - great future racing game

Burnout - Great street racer with a “crash mode” good for hours of entertainment

Killzone Liberation - Isometric shooter with great (but tiny) graphics

Gottleib Pinball Hall of Fame - great for quick games of pinball. Allows multiplayer on the same PSP.

Dark Alliance series - isometric dungeon crawlers that aren’t as sophisticated as their PC or console counterparts but are still good fun.

Beats - downloadable rhythm game that lets you use music stored on the PSP. Good fun for a few bucks

Twisted Metal Head On - an oldie but a goodie, combat driving from the PS2 era.

Virtua Tennis - fun tennis game with lots of mini games

Lemmings - another computer classic that works great on the PSP

Worms - Yet another PC conversion and very faithful, also allowing for multiplayer action on the same PSP. This is another great one for trips.

Those are the ones I usually take with me.

Some of those sound great…thanks! We’ll probably look into Burnout first, as we both love racing games.

I haven’t played Daxter itself, but the Jak trilogy on the PS2, which Daxter is spun off of, are some of the finest games on the console, in my opinion. If I did get a PSP, Daxter’s the first game I’d get.
