Sony suffers a second security breech - MMO players beware

I mentioned this in the first thread about Sony’s security breech on their Playstation and Quirocity networks. At the time, Sony was saying that credit card info for about 13k users had been stolen from their MMO division, Sony Online Entertainment. But now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that personal info was stolen from 25 MILLION subscribers. That number (probably) doesn’t (yet) include credit card data - except for the original 13k, who were located in Japan and Europe.

In light of the new revelations - and who knows what - tomorrow will bring, I started this second thread specifically to warn people who play Sony MMO’s or other games through Sony Online Entertainment that your personal info might very well be compromised. You should change your passwords, keep an eye on your credit card statements, and rethink your secret questions.

A thorough virus scan, while likely unnecessary, is never a bad idea, especially if you use the same password in several places. (Stop that.)

How much do you want to bet that Sony deliberately decided not to use any of the standard off-the-shelf ways of securing data because everyone knows about them and that’d make it unsecure, and decided to instead cobble together something half-assed of their own?

First I indulged in smugness at the correctness of my decision to never buy a PS3, and now I indulge in smugness at the correctness of my decision to never touch an SOE game.

I feel somewhat the same.
