Sony: You fucking suck

I just made an attempt to log onto SOCOM 2, an online shooter with voice chat capability. I haven’t been online for a long time, and my clan members have been asking when I’m going to pick the controller up again. I decided tonight would be a fine time to kick some ass. Only the tv screen made several ominous warnings that my memory card was not formated, suggested that I should have it reformatted, and told me there was no going forward untill I did this.

Well, since I wasn’t able to use my memory card, or even view the data on it all of a sudden, I took the machine’s advice. And now everything on the card is erased.

50 hours of progress into Star Ocean 3, gone

Countless bonus characters and pieces of artwork from Marvel Vs Capcom 2, gone

My nearly perfect Ratchet and Clank file? Gone

All of my Champions of Norrath, Twisted Metal Black, Armored Core 2, Return of the King, Timesplitters 2, and everything else, gone gone gone gone. But what hurts the most is that my Devil May Cry file, the one where I’m more than halfway through the game on the Dante Must Die mode is also gone. Getting that far is one of my finest gaming achievments, right up there with beating the original Contra on the original three men.

And I haven’t taken my memory card out of my PS2 in months. I take very good care of my games and game systems.

Sony…you really, really, blow.

Well, if you haven’t played any games since you formatted the card, I’m pretty sure that you can download a file restore program and recover at least some files. You’ll probably need a PC with a card reader, though.

You’re complaining that you had a choice of whether or not to destroy all of your hard work and you chose to and thus destroyed all of your hard work?

Why couldn’t you have just turned the thing off? Unplugged the controller? Taken the memory card out?

Unless there’s something I’m missing, it appears that you brought this on yourself.

I don’t think removing the controller or turning the game system off wouldn have made any changes in the memory card. Perhaps it may have been worth a try, but I don’t see how it could have accomplished anything. And the options I had were:

Delete everything

Be left with a memory card with corrupt data that’s good for nothing.

Ouch. As somewhat of a gamer myself, I know how that must feel, though I’ve never lost numerous games at once (Though that’s mainly due to never owning a memory-card based system). Unfortunately, shit happens. Ouch. Just ouch.

This may not be much consolation, but if you managed all those things once, you should be able to do them again. It’ll be a lot of hard work, but won’t it be worth to to regain your bragging rights?

Did you recently try out a demo disc from a magazine? I heard there was a demo of a game on there that erased all the data on your memory cards on accident. That sucks, man. I’ve still got you on my SOCOM friends list and hadn’t seen you in a while (I’ve been off and on, as well). Maybe we’ll run into each other again!

Slight SOCOM related hijack: have you been on the new International Server? It’s okay, but I have yet to run into a single non-American on it.

Does your memory card have the official PS2 logo on it? If not, it’s untested and unlicensed by Sony, and potentially unreliable.

Whoops. I was thinking of the Nintendo64 where the memory card is in the controller.

i feel for you brother my worst disaster was with my previous xbox it just failed to boot up (although research on the net says I can get it to work by installing a mod chip) one day. gone are all my steel battalion, ninja gaiden, morrowind, and many more. but the one that hurt the most was my dead or alive beach volleyball save. literally hundreds of hours, i had almost every suit for every girl all vanished in the blink of an eye. :frowning:

Viewtiful Joe 2.

Not really. Many of the saves were more like trophies. If you lost a medal of honor, would you really want to go behind enemy lines to get another one? I have to spend more time on school, and reading. Restoring my memory card to it’s former state would kill my grades, and would take a helluva long time. More time than it’s worth really. It took me years to collect all that data.

Oh God. I get demos from Sony, the PS underground, and from the Official Playstation Magazine. That’s probably what did it.

I haven’t been on SOCOM very much lately. I bit off more than I can chew last semester, so I didn’t invest too much time into. Also, most of our clan memebers changed our name so that we have arrows on either side. My new screename is -> JoeSki <-. I’ve got some time off now, so I intend to jump back on the SOCOM saddle and kickass soon. I’ll have to add you to my buddy list. You have the same username, right?

Yup. I don’t trust third party cards, so I stick with the official Sony stuff.

I say we buy five cartons of rocky road ice cream and bawl our eyes out while watching Tron :frowning: .

Yes. I did play that.

Saaay… that’s not so bad.

Yep, same name. I try to get on at least once a weekend and if possible, once during the week (although that usually doesn’t end up happening). I wish I had more time to do it, though.
