Sophie's Choice, the movie- spoilers - question

My question contains a pretty big spoiler so I’ll bump it down a bit.

I may have missed it somewhere, but what happened to her son? Was he indeed sent to Germany to be raised as a “good German”? I heard them talking about it but when the time of the choice came I was a bit confused. The girl is carried off to her death, and Sophie and her son are taken to the camp, right? The flashbacks are thus sort of in reverse order…well, like this:

Sophie is seen typing the letter for her father, notices the word “extermination”
Sophie is with her lover, whose sister wants her to work against the Germans
Sophie’s father dies - does her husband die, too?
Sophie and her children are arrested. Sophie makes the choice.
Then Sophie is in the concentration camp, trying to seduce the guard to get some news for her son or to save her son.
Or do we never find out what happened? The whole Stingo/Nathan/Sophie plot was really distracting (though Merryl Streep is amazing, truly.)

I’ve never seen the movie all the way through, but from reading the book twice (most recently about five years ago), my recollection is that Sophie never discovers Jan’s fate.
