Sorel vs. Ugg

I’ve had a pair of Sorel pack boots for yonks. I guess I got them around 1992. Great things to get into after a day of skiing. A few years ago I got a pair of high-top Ugg boots. I found that they were much more comfortable than the Sorels.

The Uggs were great for L.A., where temperatures rarely reach what many people would consider “cold”. I’ve been wearing them almost every day since I moved to Washington.

Well, it’s getting a little brisk now. I’ve found that the Uggs aren’t quite warm enough. Almost, but not quite. I’ve also discovered that they slip a bit in the snow. (Why I’m only finding this out now, when I’ve worn them at ski areas, I don’t know. Probably because I’d put them on in the car for the drive home.)

Since we have snow today, and after noticing a slight loss of traction a couple of times, I decided to put on the Sorels. The heavy lug soles of the Sorels haven’t slipped yet. And the boots are much warmer than the Uggs. Sure, they’re a bit heavy and clunky; but my feet are warm and I’m not worried about winding up on my bum.

But I’ll probably slip on the Uggs when I get out of bed in the morning.

I thought so too, but REI still carries them.

I have both Sorels and Uggs. My mother doesn’t like my Sorels because of the removeable liner (one of the features I shopped for) and bought me Uggs for Christmas. However, the Uggs I’ve worn once since Christmas and scratched the hell out of the leather shoveling the driveway. Guess I’m a Sorel person - as the Sorel’s look like the day I bought them (ugly, but rubber).

Mine both seem toasty enough in a Minnesota winter.

I’m a Sorel fan since the 80’s. In northern MN, I don’t think anybody wore/wears anything but. I love the liners because if you get a second set, you always have dry boots. My dad is still wearing a pair that he bought 20 some years ago.

If they are out of business, it must be very recent because my last months Cabelas catalog is still carrying them.

Sorel declared chapter 11 a couple years back, and did some restructering, at least my brain seems to remember something like that. I don’t like the hard plastic-y sole of the uggs, too slippery. Comfy feet might mean a cracked skull.

Appears to be a going concern. I’ve had a pair of Sorel’s for about a dozen years. I fully expect them to last another twenty.

Hmm…sure does. It musta been the bankruptcy thing mentioned earlier by…somebody.

I like the removable liners because they can be taken out and washed, if necessary, and will dry out faster.

I grew up in the UP of Michigan. I doubt I’d ever use any other boots than Sorels. They just don’t make any better.

I’d still go with the Sorels. It’s a matter of street cred, man. All the homies would dis me. :smiley:

I gave my dad a pair of Kamiks when I couldn’t afford Sorels. They seemed to be virtually identical to Sorels, but there was something different about the liners. They seems to have been good boots, and I know that I’ve seen them a lot in Southern California sporting goods stores. (At least, the last time I bothered to look.) I believe both are Canadian products.

My Sorels have the blue-grey liners with the white fleece on top. IIRC, they changed the liners several years ago. Since mine are virtually new (do they ever wear out?) I haven’t looked at liners recently. I guess I should check out the site that UncleBeer linked.

Got the Uggs on now. The pack boots are too clunky to wear around the house.

N9IWP: Sounds like my Coleman lantern. Every year when it would rain, someone would crash into something and we’d lose power for a couple of hours. I bought a Coleman lantern so that I could read when the power went out. Since I bought the lantern, the power had only gone out due to rain once; and it came back just as I was lighting the lantern. (The power did go out for several hours after the Northridge quake, but most of the time was during the daylight hours.)
