Uggs

This thread in The Pit got hijacked into an Uggs thread. I thought I’d start an Uggs-specific thread.

So Uggs. Love 'em, or hate 'em?

I own a pair. I got them yonks ago for wearing after skiing. They’re much more comfortable after a long day in ski boots than my Sorel pack boots. Lighter, too. I took them with me SCUBA diving last season, and they’re ‘just the thing’ after getting out of the cold waters of Puget Sound. They’re easy to slip on if I want to go to the store and can’t be arsed to put on socks and real shoes. And they’re great on those cold Winter days when I’m lounging around the house. Unlike (apparently) the girl mentioned in the Pit thread, I don’t wear mine as a ‘fashion statement’. Except for quick runs to the market, I don’t wear them ‘in public’. They’re just good, comfortable, warm boot-like things that keep my feet warm around the house or after engaging in some cold activity. IOW, I find them functional.

It’s getting warmer now, so I’m wearing my fleecy slippers from REI. But I’ll still slip on the Uggs if I’m going to the corner market, because I feel funny about wearing house slippers in public.

I hate them now. They’re played. When I first became aware of them, I was neutral. I’ve seen a few gals wear them with the right outfit and not look too ridiculous.

They’re not for me, though. I prefer a more tailored shoe.

So you see them more as a played-out fashion statement, and not as a functional thing?

  1. They are something I overlook/forgive on a hot girl in a short skirt.
  2. They are something I don’t really take notice of at a ski resort.
  3. I don’t care for the traditional ones personally. But these Uggs are not bad for a random light duty winter boot.

I wasn’t really clear. I was referring to the ones that were (are?) all the rage. They are pictured here.

I dislike them as a fashion statement, to me it just looks silly. As a winter boot I can forgive it though, I would even buy a pair like the ones UrbanChic linked to as my toes always freeze in winter and these ones might do a better job then the ones I usually buy. In winter I think we’re all allowed to look silly in the name of keeping warm.

I also own a slipper very similar to these which I find very comfortable. Having seen these now, I suspect mine are a cheap knock-off. I hadn’t seen them at all before now except in the cheap variety. I might buy a pair when my cheap ones wear out as I wear slipper most of the time when I’m inside because of our chilly floors.

Wearing them in the middle of summer/spring though just looks wrong to me. I agree with the assessment of ‘muppet feet’ tossed out in the pit thread. Of course anyone wearing oversize shoes drives me nuts, it reminds me of Digimon.

I personally think they were misspelled and were meant to be called Ugh! I have a few problems with them as general footwear:
They do not seem to be very structural…I suppose if you are using them more like slippers, that doesn’t matter, but I see people who have foot problems wearing them and, if I am not mistaken, they don’t have much foot support/ankle support, etc.
They are suede…BIG problem in places where it is really winter and streets/sidewalks/parking lots are always slushy and grimy. I have yet to see a pair that isn’t all filthy and sopping wet unless…
They are worn at inappropriate times and places…If it is 70 and dry, why do we need fuzzy lined boots?
I also don’t find them particularly cute with any outfit I’ve seen 'em with. YMMV

Although, the post-skiing hanging out around a fireplace does sound like an acceptable use. Maybe they are like Nalgene water bottles. Some people have a legitimate use for them and other people want to be trendy. I reserve the right to contemplate my opinion and change it without notice.

I always thought they were named correctly, considering they’re so freaking ugly.

Honestly, every time I see someone on the street wearing them (obviously as a fashion statement since it never gets cold enough in Northern California to warrant wearing them) I really want to stop them and ask them if they truly think they look cute.

Because they so don’t. They’re horrible.

I thought they were sort of cute at first but now I’m tired of them. But I’m with you, it’s not my style.

Oh man, do I hate them. I don’t care what you wear in the privacy of your own home, but if you are parading all around town in a tiny skirt and boots garenteed to make your legs look like chunky stumps thinking you look like Miss Thang, I’m not going to hold back laughing. The look so silly! They are entirely inappropriate!

At best, they make you look like a wanna-be final fantasy character. But it’s more likely to make you look like a cheap celeberty knockoff without the brains in your body to take a look at what your wearing and realize that even though it’s popular, it sucks.

Here you can buy shaggy ones that make you look like you have yeti feet, and tall thigh high lace-up ones that make people look like a goth-gone-eskimo.

I got my Uggs years ago. I bought them because once I put them on I never wanted to take them off. That was way before they became “fashionable”.

I don’t think they’re pretty or stylish. They’re just the warmest, driest, most comfy footwear I’ve ever owned. (I’m wearing them right now, at the office and it’s about 60 degrees outside).

I like them, but what I hate about them is the fact that they’ve become popular with the “cute-girl” set, which pretty much means I wouldn’t be caught dead in them. (Okay, that’s not quite true–they do make nice after-ice-hockey boots).

Way in the back of my closet I have a pair of Uggs that I bought in 1987, before everybody and their dog had a pair. I thought they were cool, in a sort of bohemian-hippie-chic way. The only thing I didn’t like about them is the soles were crap and the back of the right heel disintegrated quickly after I drove in them a few times. But even after all that I still bought another pair (dark gray, with better soles) years later, and I do occasionally still wear them. I’d wear them more if they weren’ t “in,” though.

They may be comfy and warm, but I think they are almost the ugliest footwear known to man, next to anything made by Birkenstock.

Incidentally, I live in a college town, where you find the girls Uggs are being marketed to, and so far I’ve only seen one girl wearing them. Maybe they’re already dead as fashion, or maybe it’s so warm here for so long that nobody wants to wear them.

There’s a girl in my section who has somewhat big legs - she’s got a nice figure with a broad back and wide hips, and so she naturally has bigger legs. No big deal, really.

Except that she wears calf-height Uggs, and often plays a girl with a short skirt and a loooong jacket. cue trumpets As a result, the bigness of her calves appears to extend all the way down to the soles of her feet. She has ankles that are a bit daintier and so she’s really more flattered by other types of shoes.

Slave to fashion, I suppose.

Are Ugg boots originally Australian or Kiwi?

Most Aussie kids grow up with a pair of Ugg boots to wear around the house on cold mornings. They’re comfortable and warm, but definitely not outdoor wear. Wearing ugg boots outside the house is something similar to wearing tracksuit pants* in public – trashy, IMO.

  • Exception made for those in the pursuit of physical exercise.

They’re ugly. Q.E.D. Which doesn’t matter, if you’re using them as slippers. I had a pair of these dandies once, and I am sure we’ll all agree that they would win no beauty contests. But I gotta standby what most people here have said already: it ain’t a fashion statement. They’re ugly. Wearing them with an off-the-shoulder Von Dutch shirt and a miniskirt is wrong. I saw that combo in Disneyland roughly every 10 feet when I went last week. And it was 80 degrees out!

I’ve been wearing Uggs since the 70’s.
The ones I have now are black. A suede brush keeps them reasonably clean.
I don’t wear them out to fancypants dinner parties. I love any kind of footwear that is slip on/slip off, and my Uggs come in real handy when it is cold outside.

Well, I’m mixed:

If you’re wearing them because they’re functional and warm then I give you two thumbs up.

If you’re wearing them because you think you’re making some sort of statement, then you’re a fashion victim, and dumb to boot (pun intended).

YMMV.

Are they expensive? Because they may be ugly, but if they’re as warm and comfy as people say they are, I would so like to get a pair.

Here in Australia, you see “Ugg” boots (of every brandname imaginable) in the slipper section. Many (most?) houses here don’t have central air and floors are often timber (hardwood). Slippers are essential.

You do see young girls out and about doing the mini-skirt/Ugg combo, but they’re usually about 15. My husband says it’s a “westie” look, which I think can be translated as “white trash” (sorry for the offensive term, but that’s the most accurate translation).
