This thought occurred to me the other day, soon after I woke up with the urgent need to tinkle: I cannot recall ever being woken up from sleep by any urgent need to defecate. Anecdotal evidence (i.e. I asked a few people) indicates that, while being woken up by a full bladder is common, being woken up by a full colon doesn’t happen.
Why the difference? Certainly, at other times of the day, the need to defecate can be overpowering.
Normally, bowel urgency would be of a less pressing nature, probably because of the greater capacity and resiliency of the intestines. The Bladder, with its small size and relatively inelastic when full consistency, would need to be emptied more urgently than the bowels.
Last night, for example, we went out to a BBQ joint, where I consumed a burger with pulled pork barbecue, two kinds of cheese, hot sauce and fried onion bits on top, sided by coleslaw and homemade potato chips. I was awakened in the night by what I’ll characterise as a “sudden need to establish a streaming video connection”, but that was due to the grease and overall volume of the meal.
I woke up at 3 this morning and had to download a very large .exe file. The excrutiating, extra large comes out sideways kind. This was preceded by the usual tinkle call at about 2:50. Climbed back in bed and tried to go to sleep but felt quite a bit of pressure down below. I tried to let off a little excess gas to see if that would help but it didn’t. It was almost 3:30 before I got back to bed and then the alarm went off at 4. And my wife just called and her only complaint was the aroma of our bedroom after I got up the second time.
For myself, the regular .jpg downloads almost never happen at night. However when I have an IBS attack, the ensuing .bmp (non-compressed if you know what I mean) download often happens at night, usually 3 or so in the morning…
I wonder why always 3’ish? It must be supper making it’s way through. The same for my father who has Chron’s.
