Sorry terrorists killed your husband. Now get out of the country.

I don’t think you heard me, madam. I said I’d pass it along.

I, for one, had a slight perception that you were shrugging off her recommendation. It’s possible that someone else may have read more sarcasm into it.

The letter is sent. Incidentally, I really don’t appreciate the attitudes you imputed to me, Shayna.

I read your reply to me exactly as lno did, matt - as dripping with sarcasm. Therefore I wondered if you simply didn’t care about how your local paper portrayed us. I apologize that I misinterpreted your intent and I thank you for following up with the paper.

It’s bad enough that we are being portrayed as evil and heartless by the media in countries that hate us. It’s extremely disheartening to hear that the media outlets of one of our friends can’t be relied upon not to show us in that light - especially when we’re in the midst of a hugeass war against people who actually think this kindof crap is true. Please forgive me if I’m extremely sensitive about this issue right now. My fucking country’s at war, and I and my countrymen could be the victims of additional terrorist attacks at any moment because some motherfuckers hate our evil, heartless asses. So I’m a little touchy about it.

Thank you, Shayna.

I would note the following facts:

  1. the Mirror is a weekly paper, which came out this morning;
  2. the news release is dated yesterday. It may very well be, as someone suggested, that it came over the newswires, and there weren’t any facts TO check.

Canadian and Yankee both so I hold more authori-ta than all of you!! :slight_smile: and Quebecois to boot.

Shayna…the montreal mirror is not representative of canadian newspapers. the montreal mirror=the boston herald in my estimation. people just mostly read it for local stuff/goings on. I highly doubt a canadian newspaper along the lines of the Globe and Mail would have written such an obviously poorly researched story. It’s just two steps above a tabloid-a la Herald, in my estimation. Besides, it’s not like montrealers have this big moral highground on which to stand. What was that I heard about the street girl freezing to near death in front of an office building and people being instructed not to call the police?

hey matt…montreal-er as well?

Well, here’s a link to the Montreal Mirror, but I cannot find this story. A search for “Gilby” turns up one hit, but provides no link to the article that contains it. The mystery remains.

shit-i messed up my own reply, was thinking of the gazette…it’s been a year since I left. even worse-the mirror is just some trashy newspaper most of us read for the rant line, local artistic happenings and cd reviews. it’s penned by people going through their post-adolescent idealistic phase before they stop making like 5000 dollars a year and thinking that it’s a real salary. it’s free…you pick it up at the local coffee shops along with the hour and read it over your ristretto creme brulee. it is not exactly a publication anyone sane would look to in order for an unbiased and well researched perspective on any situation of great note other than the latest beck cd or something. it’s equivalent to like greenwich village type free newspapers. no one takes it seriously as a commentator on international affairs-i’m sure their writers have nothing better to do with their post-collegiate angst than pen trashy articles. people get their good news from other fine canadian publications and they would never print such poorly researched tripe.

Unless they were the Gazette, but I digress. (I’m more than a little jaundiced about Southam publications in general.)

anu-la: Yep, and Canuck/Yankee hybrid as well. Pleased ta meetcha, me trout.

Uncle: the article was in a small weekly feature. It therefore may not be on the website.

yes the Gazette is a piece of shit newspaper as well. so are most newspapers. there are only three our four publications i really like out there…Globe & Mail, New York Times, Washington Post and the Economist. I haven’t bothered researching the state of editorial reply in Canadian newspapers but I can assure you that whatever it is…the Mirror isn’t exactly an example of mass canadian viewpoint anymore than whatever leftist-free stuff you can get in the US…so for once, Don’t Blame Canada (well at least not based on the Mirror) :).

I’m a bit suspicious of that given that I first read the story in yesterday’s Sun (the British tabloid) and it already had the news that she wasn’t going to be deported. It really does sound to me like sloppy reporting (putting it diplomatically) on the part of the Mirror.
