When The States does stuff like this, I notice. And then when it does it again, (not necessarily the exact same thing, but something similarly miffing), I remember. And it adds to the gigantic mountain of resentment towards the States that I share with my peers and contemporaries.
I don’t know what should happen first, the US getting a clue, or us Canucks getting over ourselves. I mean, we have to stop feeling superior sometime. Right? Right? shrug

If it’s any reassurance, the Bush Administration is doing wierd shit to its own citizenry. For the past couple of days, the FBI has had a Cessna flying over Bloomington, Indiana, spying on the populace. Somewhere, even as we are posting, there is a picture in government files of The Peyote Coyote standing on a sidewalk, looking up in the night sky, and wondering “What the hell is that idiot doing circling Bloomington at 12:30 a.m.?”

This is not new. This has been happening to Muslims sense 9-11. It just hasn’t touched ‘you’ - the non-muslim ‘you’. It’s been touching all dark skinned people for about a year now. And it is just starting to touch white skinned people.

I know, Feath. There was that disgusting incident with Rohinton Mistry the other month. And I remember what was mentioned on the boards earlier… about the Arab guys traveling together, who each put $50 into a pool… whoever got stopped and searched most often during the trip would be declared the “official terrorist” and win all the money.
This is just an excuse for a lot of the racism inherent in governments to come to the surface.
Let’s get some perspective here. Not only was it was not the American people who did this, it was not the American government. It was not the INS nessisarily either. It was a group of over officious assholes, exercising horrible judgement and flaunting their power.
There is a damn good reason to exercise caution in immigration these days. An Indian, with a hispanic name, and a Canadian passport is unusual and suspicious, and it should get a second glance by an immigration officer. I have no idea what procedure is for dealing with a suspicious situation, but at some point they went overboard and fucked up, and should be investigated and possibly punished. But lets not turn this into Bush bodily throwing her into a prison plane to India.
P.S. for the record I once spent three hours being interogated by Canadian border guys in Windsor because one of the girls in our car grew up in Chinatown and spoke with a slight Chinese accent even though she was born American. They seperated us into different rooms and tried to ‘break’ us. The asshole I got threatened me that he could throw me in prison for trying to enter Canada without a valid passport on me.
