This story has been pretty big news here in Southeastern New England. But I watch the news at lunchtime every day and every time I hear more details, it maes me sicker and sicker.
The word we’re hearing now is thatRobidoux and his wife received a “prophecy” from another sect member that their son should have nothing but breast milk. (This after he had already begun eating solid food.) However, the problem was that Karen Robidoux had become pregnant again and was no longer lactating. Not bowing to common sense, Jacques stood by and watched for two months while his son slowly starved to death.
I cannot understand this.
Early reports from the opening arguments say that Karen, after she saw what was happening started to weaken and wanted to do something for her son, but was stopped by Jacques, whose “religious faith” was apparently quite a bit stronger.
You know, I could almost (and I repeat almost see this as a matter of extreme religious conviction gone wrong. But once their precious baby was finally dead, they went to a deserted park in Maine and secretly buried it there. They continually rejected any kind of law-enforcement intrusion and refused to give an explanation of what happened. What’s the matter? Are you not proud of what you’ve done? Don’t you think your God is happy with you?
I’m sorry. I don’t care how much faith you have or what kind of God you put it in, but your religious beliefs do NOT give you the right to starve your children. I cannot envision a God who would find joy in having you tend to a child day by day while it screams in hunger and thirst while you wait for some sort of divine intervention. No religion gives you that right.
I can’t imagine a punishment that would be harsh enough for these people.
I could. Slow starvation because it’s “prophecied.” The only problem is my take on my religion doesn’t allow me to inflict it. Do you know if this sect is supposed to be based on Christianity? If so, how do they make an act of cruelty fit into a religion which is supposed to be based on love? I know. That’s a question which has been asked too many times. Maybe one day we’ll get an answer.
Maybe once they’re convicted the prisons could slowly starve them to death, offering them, ironically, only breastmilk. “An eye for an eye,” hath said God Almighty, did he not?
I really think the apocalypse is coming. There was that NY couple a few weeks ago, that was basically along these lines. Luckily they were able to save the child in that case. I cant believe things this bizarre and disturbing are becoming more and more common.
I wonder if it is possible to prosecute the fellow cult member who told them of the “prophecy” : it dosen’t lessen their culpability at all, but it seems like he is also guilty.
I actually have my doubts that it is more common now. I just think that with the Internet, we’re hearing about it more often. Before, all our news would’ve come from the nightly news and newspapers. The number of stories we heard then was limited.
And I wouldn’t have any problem inflicting the same punishment on them that they inflicted on their son. Maybe after two months with only minimal water and excruciating pain, they’d realize what they did. Hell, I’d happily feed them just enough to keep it going for a couple of years, or until they gnawed off their arms.
This is the same sect that David and Rebecca Corneau belong to - the couple who have had one or two kids who they claim died of natural causes at birth, who they then buried in a secret location.
Hey there foklks, calm down. Religion gives you the excuse to do anything, as long as its sanctioned by the governing body of that religion.
Oh man I can’t wait until the pope leads us on a holy war against abortion clinics, children of unwed mothers and people who fidget during mass! Their slaughter will be for the glory of god!
<keeps polishing his broadsword>
Oh boy, it’ll be great!
Anyhoo,
I think this, and many of the other cases like it, are simply cases of people using religion to cover up their real reasons and hide their manipulations. Its the same as how in the 80’s D&D made people commit suicide or kill people. Not really, but it can buy sympathy and a reduced prison stay with any luck.
Pity there isn’t some way we can pass laws mandating that people have to be educated and moderatly well adjusted to society BEFORE they can ‘get religion’.
Ok, are we so stupid that we still assume that because we HEAR about weird shit going on more often due to better access to media that it is HAPPENS more often? Come on, haven’t we come to the realization that wider reporting != widerspread oddity?
The update today has a certain irony to it. Cult family members were brought in to testify at the trial. The cult has always stated that they do not feel bound by the norms of society or the laws of the nation.
They did, though, all decide they respected the fifth amendment enough for them all to stand in it.
No, but in the case I mentioned, I think it’s more than just a little hypocritical to say that you have no respect for the laws of the nation, but then fall back on them to save you when it’s convenient.
