I think it’s a wonderful way to show bewildered citizens of other countries how truly unhappy we are with our election results. It’s also a nice place for us 'Merkins to vent our frustration.
Here’s my contribution.
I do think that posing with guns on werenotsorry.com is a GREAT way to promote the “Gods, Gays, Guns” stereotype. Way to get’ir dunn thar, Cletus! The more moderate Right my do well to hold up an “I’m with stupid” sign on that site.
I’m the same way, matt_mcl m’dear, so I guess OMMV.
I thought it was a cute site, even if the apologies were unneccesary. We know everybody who voted for Kerry did their best, no need to apologize for everyone who didn’t.
They haven’t accepted my pic of a crying newborn with rasta hair, Jamaican colors around it and a joint in his hand. [saying: “Don’t be sorry, we love you”]
Look, I doubt any of the Kerry voters really think that they personally owe the rest of the world an appology. It’s not like they’re the ones who re-elected Bush. They’re just trying to (1) Make sure the rest of the world realizes that Americans don’t all love Bush and his foreign policy, and (2) commiserate with each other over a disappointing political defeat. What’s so bad about that?
Personally, I thought a lot of the photos had a great sense of humor to them, and viewing them gave me a welcome pick-me-up after an election result that I’m far from happy with.
Don’t know. A number of posters on this board mentionned they felt ashamed by the results of the elections, which imply a feeling of personnal guilt. Still here, on various instances (Abu Ghraib, for example), posters mentionned they had switched from “proud to be an american” mode to “ashamed of being an american” mode.
Also, the world “apologize” appears really often (on internet boards, on interview, etc…) for people who don’t feel the owe an apology.
As I said, I think it’s more the embarrassment kind of shame than the guilt kind of shame. After all, if your brother makes an ass of himself in public, you can be ashamed of him, even though you didn’t raise him.
What’s so bad about it is the assumption that non-Americans think all American love George Bush, so there needed to be a website to explain to them that we don’t. Really, now. If they were following the election as closely as they claim, and are so concerned, then they already know how narrow the margin was and how many Americans got up and voted this time. They must be aware that Bush did not win by a landslide and plenty of people don’t like him.
I loathe the Bush administration, but that website is pretty obnoxious. I don’t feel one jot of personal guilt or shame about the election, and the people I think shoudl feel it don’t, so what’s the point? Trying to apologize to a world that should know better than to tar all Americans with the same broad brush is an exercise in self-abnegation that I really don’t need right now. I feel bad enough about the situation without prostrating myself with guilt at the feet of the world too.
I’m just surprised how ugly the people in the pictures are. Bleh! Maybe it’s time to rethink my liberal leanings, so as not to be associated with such an unattractive group of people.
I hope that other nations are more aware of how the vote went than many Americans, both liberal and conservative, seem to be. Maybe we need a website explaining that not all of that 49% came from “Blue States.”
Also, more people voted for the opponent of the incumbent President than ever before.
I don’t feel guilt about the election. My candidate lost. I do feel shame over Abu Ghraib. My countrymen did it. My taxes paid for it. Those who gave the orders will not be held accountable. And I am doing nothing.
