South Park 4/21 "201"

Even censoring his image wasn’t that bad. It was bleeping out all audio mention of his name that revealed the suits at Comedy Central to be ball-less wonders. I’m sure somewhere Tom Cruise is laughing his ass off.

Since I don’t recall that the extremist muslims as having said that the prophet’s name cannot be uttered, I wonder if that means that Comedy Central was “in” on the joke.

According to Matt and Trey, the censoring was no joke. It was done by Comedy Central after the episode was finished and delivered to them and before it aired. Here’s their statement from the website:

Oh, come on.

This is just an Andy Kaufman style joke, right? I think they delivered the episode that way.

Right?

Funny thing is that when I saw the previous episode last week, they didn’t bleep Muhammed’s name. It really had me scratching my head last night. Until they started bleeping whole speeches.

Then I just gave up.

Can get these two threads folded together?

As a skeptical muslim, I wholeheartedly agree. Comedy Central’s moral cowardice is as shameful as it is counter-productive.

They hadn’t received legitimate death threats from terror groups at that point.

Gozu, as a Muslim, what did you think of the Mohammed episodes of SP; Super Best Friends, Cartoon Wars, 200 and 201?

I think the radical fanatical Muslim sect are essentially that religion’s version of christian televangelists and the Westboro Baptist Scumbags, right? except the fanatics are far more reactionary

What’s supposed to be legitimate about communicating a death threat?

They certainly seemed to drag out almost every character in the show’s history for this one – but where were God and Satan?

Another bit of evidence that Comedy Central is responsible for bleeping out Mohammed’s name–his name appears in the closed captioning repeatedly. Kyle’s speech, however, is completely replaced by [beep].

I thought it was an awesome episode, although I also thought the bleeping was intentional by Stone and Parker.

I think it’s quite cute the way they not only didn’t do anything vaguely offensive regarding Mo or Islam, in fact Mo might be regarded as the hero role? He was just doing what he could to try and resolve problems as amicably as possible…

Yeah, see this is the thing that pisses me off the most. Comedy Central looked the other way when they had Buddah snorting coke, Jesus jacking off, making Moses a Tron character, etc. But Muhammad didn’t even get put in any offensive positions yet HIS religion is the one getting censored, just because of some death threats. Didn’t the scientoligists do the same thing (and Issac Hayes quit the show), and yet that didn’t stop CC either. All that network is doing is showing everyone that threats of violence (but only if they come from a group that is taken seriously) can get things accomplished.

http://www.thedailyshow.com/ The Daly Show covered it nicely last night.

i’m pretty sure the bleeping was unintentional but the physical censoring was.

Yeah… No way the suits at comedy central would have put the censor bar over tom cruise at the appropriate time. Also, his name wasn’t censored… If Matt and Trey had done the censoring of mohammed’s name, anyone saying ‘tom cruise’ would have been bleeped as well.

Just got around to seeing it this weekend. I assumed that the physical censoring of Mohammed was intentionally done by Trey and Matt…because otherwise how would that Tom Cruise joke have worked?

I already had to change the Wikipedia article. How could you watch the episode and not notice that the censor bar was intentional?

About Cartman’s Dad:

Whoever called that it was a Ginger was amazingly insightful. And it being a Denver Bronco really works as something the town would actually defend, as they’d done it before. But I wonder why Cartman is going to make the Ginger souls video. Thanks to Mitch, he’s already got all of that handled.

Well, I did assume it was, but there were other threads where people were referring to it as something Comedy Central was making them do. I didn’t see how that was popular so I figured I’d just clarify here.
