Soy and Almond Milk As a Source of Calcium.

I have been drinking soy and Almond Milk as of late. Actually the soy milk (I got from a dollar store BTW) tastes pretty good. The Almond Milk tastes rather bland for some reason.

Anyway, I take Omeprazole. And one of its side effects is Calcium deficiency. I also take Sulfasalazine. And one of its side effects is Kidney stones (don’t quote me on that last one–I am not 100% sure). Anyway, one way or another, I don’t want to get kidney stones. Who does?

And therein lies the dilemma. I once read in a medical book (so sorry, no cite:)), natural forms of Calcium like Kale and cheese actually *prevent * kidney stones. Artificial forms, like Calcium supplements by contrast could cause them.

So is Soy/Almond milk a natural or artificial source of Calcium? I know they add Calcium Carbonate to them, according to the label. But it is dissolved in the milk. So does that make a difference? Also Soy/Almond milk is natural. Isn’t it?

And while we’re at it, I might as well ask my next question: What exactly is Soy and Almond Milk? Again, according to the label, they pass water thru Almonds and Soys. So what is it basically chemically? I think someone had to ask.

Thank you in advance to all who reply:)

Grinding nuts in water as a milk substitute has been done since Medieval times. People these days want to attack the concept, calling it “Soy water” instead of “Soy milk”, but at least in the case of almonds, almond milk is a work for nuts ground in water and filtered.

I also have similar health problems as you’ve described, and I also use various nut milks as they have less protein and calcium than milk. But I don’t think more specific health info is shared here. Or anywhere responsible, really. My G.P. was pretty glad to hear I chose soy milk as a morning beverage, maybe yours will too.

Lewis Black on Soy Milk

There’s no such thing as soy milk. It’s soy juice. But they couldn’t sell soy juice, so they called it soy milk. Because anytime you say soy juice, you actually… start to gag. … we all know there’s no such thing as Soy milk 'cause there’s no soy titty, is there?

In the brand White Wave Silk, 8 oz. of soy milk gives you 30% of your daily requirement of calcium; same brand Almond Milk is 45%.

There are several kinds of kidney stones, made of different minerals, and depending on which kind you’re susceptible to suffer from, what you should/shouldn’t eat varies.
