Space probe relics - What would you include?

A recent thread about the Pioneer 10 probe got me thinking. The Voyager probes that have departed our solar system carry sounds, music, and images from Earth. With luck (OK, lots of luck) an alien race will one day find the probes and learn about us.

Let’s say we launch a new deep space probe, and we send along one standard DVD for video, and one standard CD for music and/or data. What would you put on them to represent us to an alien culture?

Highlights of my list:

  • Historical footage of our space program, including the moon landing.
  • Several songs from the Beatles.
  • Film: This Is Spinal Tap.
  • Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

And you?

  1. News footage of Charles and Di’s wedding.

  2. D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East (movie).

  3. Variety of game shows including “The Price is Right”, “Hollywood Squares”, and “The Newlywed Game”.

  4. One episode each of “The Brady Bunch”, “That Girl”, and “All in the Family”.

  5. Recordings of “Peacherine Rag”, “In the Mood” and “Johnny B. Goode”.

  6. Recording of radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds.

Porn

No seriously, porn is one of those few things on which the entire planet agrees on - it’s an example of global integration!!
