Spam-blocking question

When I get unwanted emails over and over from the same place, I don’t click those nefarious “click to unsubscribe” links; I just add a Message Rule that deletes the emails from the server. This works great - except for three spammers.

(I’m using the term loosely - it’s remotely possible I signed up for them at one point.)

I’ve blocked the email address, but as most people know the spammer will just use another. So I’ve blocked words in the “From” field.

But these three keep getting through. It’s weird. Can’t figure out why. The emails do go to the “Deleted Files” folder, but they shouldn’t - in theory - even show up, right? This occurs only with three emailers in particular.

Does anyone have an idea? And yes, of course - I’m using Outlook Express 6. What am I doing wrong?

Well you COULD try using the unsubscribe link, since you can’t seem to shake these guys anyway. I was getting email from some sort of Opt-In Network people, and they always had a link in the emails with the same address (actually it was an IP address) and then the final .html file name would be different.

Anyway, even though each message had a similar string in the body, i couldn’t shake them. Finally I gave up and just clicked their “remove me” link and it DID work, oddly enough. But I get so much spam at my school account that I sort of had nothing to lose by clicking the unsubscribe link. I figured my address is already out there - WAY out there - so it can’t hurt to try.

You might want to give everyone a better idea of the addresses of these emails, the content, and anything else that might help us help you to tweak your filter.

While some of the so-called “opt-in” spammers will remove you when you unsubscribe, they also add your name to the lists they sell to other people. Spammers make a good deal if not most of their money selling their mailings lists to other spammers.

You could try blocking any e-mail with the word “unsubscribe” in the body.

The three are:

Qool
CoverClicks
Gibbleguts

CoverClicks is the worst; at least with the other two, I get one email a day. That’s not so bad, although as I said they’ve defeated every attempt to block them. But CoverClicks emails come through many times a day. Bleah!

I’ve had a similar problem with netlaughter.com and DealsbyDonna.com . I’ve tried filtering for those particular strings, but despite the filters working just fine for most spammers, these seem to be completely unaffected.

And filtering for the word “unsubscribe” is a bad idea, if you’re also on any legitimate mailing lists: The NASA press release list, for instance, and the weekly Straightdope mailing both contain that word in every message.
