This quote is from Robert Reed’s novelette “Oracles” from the January, 2002 issue of Asimov’s Science Fiction. I double checked, and I did quote it accurately. The context is that people are discussing how one character was named to the “Oracle Committee”, and it’s suggested that it was because of his “public warnings about too many changes happening too quickly”. The main character responds as I quoted above.
I was merely commenting on Andy L and I giving same quote at same time.
The ship had been on a routine mission, checking and emplacing asteroid warning beacons, when the order came.
That was pretty funny…
