Speaking of cereals, where are the faux Grape Nuts?

Publix has a version too, pretty tasty with a lot of milk and nuked for a couple of minutes, then topped with fruit or a titch of maple syrup. Or both

Minor hijack here:

My favorite cereal is from Trader Joe’s and is called Toasted Oatmeal Flakes. It seems to be quite popular at my local store. But I’ve long wondered what it’s a knock-off of. Surely TJ’s didn’t come up with a new cereal on their own. Anyone know?

Since this is about food, let’s move it to IMHO.

I was going to ask if anyone had ever seen a generic version of Life. That is one I’ve never seen.

IMHO, it’s in Cafe Society :).

I eat faux Grape Nuts pretty often, when regular ones aren’t on sale. They’re a pretty good late-night snack. But regular Grape Nuts are much tastier. For some reason, brand cereal always seems to have better flavor than store brand; this doesn’t seem to be true with most other things.

Yes! Grape Nuts seems sweet to me–at times, almost cloyingly so. I’ve tried the store brands, and they don’t have this taste.

I once tried warming a cup. That sweet taste I mentioned above? Totally absent. Since it didn’t get nearly hot enough to produce a chemical change, there must be some kind of personal sensory thing going on.

I think this one from Target is pretty close.

Little chunks of cardboard. Not much different than cardboard flakes or cardboard toruses.

This. IIRC, they’re called “Crunchy Nuggets”.

The overwhelming flavor I get from Grape Nuts is malted, which makes sense, since malted barley flour is the second ingredient. Malting grains tends to bring out their natural sweetness, and malt is a flavor often associated with milk shakes and Whoppers. I love that flavor. Off-brand grape nuts that I’ve had don’t have that same flavor.
