But I think in general every dollar spent on special needs comes back eventually in taxes. There are exceptions, though. My SIL has a brother who was born microcephalic. He did learn to talk, albeit in a very limited way, but I don’t think he will ever do any useful work. It is a problem for the whole family, but when the father dies (the mother has already) he will enter some kind of institution at public expense.

I suspect there’s no hell on earth like worrying about what’s going to happen to your severely disabled child after you die.
