Caught this…this…production(?) on Cinemax last night. They must’ve cancelled “Erotic Tales of the Pest Control Guy.”
Anywho, the premise was fairly simple: GNN (natch) was covering the landing of the first manned trip to Mars.
It was shot on videotape to give you that “by gum, this is real” feel. Much like “Special Bulletin” was in 1988. Alfree Woodard, Dean Jones, Judge Reinhold, Keith Carradine among other starred. Sound like “Fantasy Island” The Movie."
The questions: Who’s seen it? What did you think in general? And WTF was up with the ending?!
I thought is was WAY better than it had a right to be with that cast and that premise. Still, not great, but not ignorable. The ending still has me flummoxed.
Yeah, I saw it… Unfortunately. I haven’t a clue as to what happened at the end. Perhaps it was the same thing that’s been making us lose contact with all our martian probes.
Anyhow, I was extremely irritated with the fact that they were able to communicate in real time instead of having the 40 minute (or so) lag.
I saw this when it was on one of the networks. Thought it was a waste of talent. I try not to nitpick too much, but when you just ignore the speed of light…
I taped this when it was on two months ago, and finally worked my way to it last night.
You’re right. I watched the ending several times, and I’m still scratching my head.
I didn’t have a problem with ignoring the time lags. It would not have been very practical to have a 90-minute movie with 40-minute time lags in the conversations–which is probably what it would have been, since they were apparently going for a conjunction mission profile, based on the length of their stay.
So. . .
Just in case anyone else wants to check this interesting movie, I do have a copy. Interesting that the writer has Russian-looking name, and one of the most important roles was a Russian. Maybe they arrived there and say that the Chechens had beaten them, and were waiting for them:D
