Speed of walking

Have you ever noticed that smart people walk faster than dumb people. At school I notice all the nerds zooming along while the not so smart people, walk slow and drag their feet.
Whats up with that ?
Has anyone else noticed this ?

I’ll walk quickly if I’m in a hurry or actually trying to get somewhere, otherwise why bother? While I’m walking about I’m not doing work, and I’d like to keep it that way…

Perhaps the smart people are interested in gettng to class.

Happened to saunter by and just wondered if you ran your user name by a spell checker?

Well, both me and my girlfriend walk very fast, and my sister walks very slow…but while most people would say I’m a little smarter than my sister, it’s not by a lot, and certainly not a big enough difference to say that it’s the reason for our difference in speed. It’s not that I’m in a hurry, it’s just that it’s actually uncomfortable for me to walk slowly. It feels much more natural and flowing to walk at a quicker clip.

BTW…I HATE slow walkers…they never move out of my way!

Well, I walk slowly sometimes and quickly sometimes. Usually when I’m walking really fast, that’s because I waited until the last minute to start walking wherever I’m heading and I don’t want to be late.

I don’t think there’s enough eveidence to call it a trend, but you could think up a few reasons for it to be.
One silly one: smart people might take more courses, hence have a tighter schedule, and have to be across campus every hour or two, while the slackers got a class or two a day and just mosey along at their own pace.
Another; since you mentioned that “nerds” walk fast (as opposed to regular smart people at school). People who are very focused on what they do tend to tune out the rest of the world - particularly if they get the cold shoulder from others for being high-acheivers. So why leisurely stroll around taking in all the giggles and jokes from “lessers”, and who cares about gocking at the same old scenery everyday … I’ve got a chemistry thesis to work on man!!! There’ll be time for sight-seeing later.
BTW, I walk at a normal speed.

Would this mean that joggers are brilliant?

I recall hearing a story on NPR, I believe, about two years ago about a study indicating that women were more attracted to men who walked quicklyl. The supposition was that men who walk fast are perceived as more likely to be successful. Did a quick search, but couldn’t find any trace of the study (didn’t want to wade through all of the speedwalking hits).
