Last night I got my first speeding ticket since 1986. I was going 39 in a 25mph zone, and this morning I checked the website for the cost…$196.00. This seems a wee bit high to me. Plus, you only get two weeks to pay it…has to be paid by my court date on January 2. So what are the prices for speeding tickets elsewhere?
hubby got one 11 over the limit a couple months ago. 198.00.
Speeding if speed limit is over 40 mph:
1-5 m.p.h. over limit: $93
6-10 m.p.h. over limit: $113
11-15 m.p.h. over limit: $144
16-20 m.p.h. over limit: $175
21-25 m.p.h. over limit: $206
26-30 m.p.h. over limit: $247
31-35 m.p.h. over limit: $298
36-40 m.p.h. over limit: $349
Over 40 m.p.h. over limit: $411
Speeding if speed limit is 40 mph or less:
1-5 m.p.h. over limit: $113
6-10 m.p.h. over limit: $124
11-15 m.p.h. over limit: $154
16-20 m.p.h. over limit: $195
21-25 m.p.h. over limit: $247
26-30 m.p.h. over limit: $298
31-35 m.p.h. over limit: $349
Over 35 m.p.h. over limit: $41 <–that’s obviously a typo but I don’t know the real amount
That’s right. In WA State you could theoretically get a $113 ticket for going 41 in a 40.
Not sure what the current fines are, but around here the tickets are given out for free.
Rhode Island speeding ticket fines seem close to yours:
ETA: Upon review, looks like RI is a bit higher. 14mph over the limit would be $225
In New Brunswick, Canada the fines go from $172.50cdn for 1-24 km/h over the limit to $604.50cdn for 50 km/h or more over the limit.
In NC, the actual fines aren’t too bad, but the court costs will be painful, and the effect on your auto insurance rates can eat you alive.
If you get caught doing 76 or more on the freeway (limit 65 MPH) you’ll be assessed four insurance points, which will kick your insurance up by 90%. It’s a real “gotcha” - doing 11 over can nearly double your insurance for the next three years, but if you keep it to only 9 over, there are no insurance points or license points assessed, and the total cost will be about $200 for court costs.
So, the general price chart for North Carolina is:
0-10 over: $200
11 or more over: Thousands
How’s this grab ya’ if you visit Ontario:
WOW!!!
I got a camera ticket a few months back. I think it was 42? in a 25. I’d love to find the sign that lowers the speed limit.
Anyway $40 and no points.
I’m sure it’s more if you actually get pulled over by a cop.
Last July, it was $354 for doing 89 in a 65 zone. California - US-395 (remote rural highway). + $52 court fee to do on-line traffic school to keep the points of my record and avoid an insurance hike. First ticket in 21 years.
New Jersey:
Exceeding speed limit by 1-9 miles per hour, $85
-
Exceeding speed limit by 10-14 miles per hour, $95
-
Exceeding speed limit by 15-19 miles per hour, $105
-
Exceeding speed limit by 20-24 miles per hour, $200
-
Exceeding speed limit by 25-29 miles per hour, $220
-
Exceeding speed limit by 30-34 miles per hour, $240
-
Exceeding speed limit by 35-39 miles per hour, $260
Speeding in a safe corridor or construction zone:
-
Exceeding speed limit by 1-9 miles per hour, $140
-
Exceeding speed limit by 10-14 miles per hour, $160
-
Exceeding speed limit by 15-19 miles per hour, $180
I realize this is unsolicited advice, but is why I always set my cruise control at exactly 9mph over the limit. Also the fact that I’ve never known anyone to be pulled over for speeding at only 9mph over the limit, whatever the limit.
