When spelling it, I always think: albu-kwer-kway, which helps me get it right.
New Mexicans usually just shorten it to Abiquiu.
The wiki thing lists “Burqueño” as one of the demonyms.
I can get behind that. Growing up in NM, we frequently referred to Albuquerque as “Burque” (pronounced BOOR-keh) with a Spanish accent.
Apropos of nothing, one of the TV stations there has the call letters KRQE, which they use to make slogans using the word “AlbuKRQE”.
I don’t recall that at all. And there really is an Abiquiu, in the northern part of the state. Was that a whoosh?
Apparently you haven’t gotten good at it, because he retains the “r”! Like the Spaniards, not the New Mexicans.
New Mexico has to have a lot of odd demonyms. What do you call a person from
• Los Lunas?
• Raton?
• Gallup?
• Eagle Nest?
• Truth or Consequences?
• Los Ojos?
(I only just figured out how “ojo” is used that way)
It’s been a couple of years since I was last there, but isn’t ABQ (after the airport) still more common?
I guess when Al Alburquerque decides to take residence in Albuquerque, things start to get a little bit confusing.

Back in the early 80s I once drove through ABQ on the way to hell and was listening to the state of the art AM radio in my fine late 1960s car.
The station ID was KRKE, the format was Country and Western, heavy on the Western and their jingle was “You’re in Kurkey country” (rhymes with turkey), followed by a gobbling tom.
I don’t know why I remember that, and damn near nothing else of broadcast radio of rest of that decade, but there you have it.
