SPI Operation Sealion - Anyone ever try it?

I used to play SPI games a long time ago. I was always intrigued by Operation Sealion, the German invasion of the UK, but never had a chance to play it.

The thread in GD made me think about it again. Any one ever play it?

I do not know what SPI games are. Link?

More generally I would recommend Hearts of Iron IV if you like WWII war-gaming. It is a very deep and involved game though so good if you want something simulating many different things…not so good if you want something more casual.

That said you can do Operation Sealion in it either organically or (I think) with a mod (of which there are many and the game supports).

SPI was a war-game company back in the 1970s; TSR took them over in the early 1980s IIRC. One of my high school buddies had a subscription to Strategy & Tactics; we used to pass issues around between us.

You young’uns playing wargames on your fancy electronical computerizer machines. Back in my day, we played wargames on paper boards. With little pieces of cardboard. And we rolled dice. None of that D20 nonsense neither. Dice had six sides and we liked it that way.

We still have tabletop games and six-siders grampa! Go back to watching Matlock!

Child of the 70’s/80’s here so not as young as I wish I was.

I had Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader by Avalon hill (and some others I can’t remember right now). Had all the little pieces arranged neatly in small parts bins.

From there I moved to PCs and became a huge Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI) fan. Was very sorry to see them go.

Today games like Hearts of Iron seem to be carrying on their legacy.

I was gonna say mention them earlier but I didn’t wanna hijack the thread; now that Whack-a-Mole brought them up tho: SSI was the bomb!

Yes, playing games like Pool of Radiance was a very formative part of my teenage years. They were very much like playing a D&D game without needing a GM or other players (AKA friends).

This was my first thought when I began playing EverQuest: “OMFG it’s just like playing D&D but there won’t be any arguing over the rules!”

And yeah, with SSI games, I loved that all the tedious parts of trad war-games were automated.

So overall, that’s a “No” to my OP.

Don’t worry Little Nemo: we’ll always have Sniper!
