My “only” there was modifying “was”; i.e., I wasn’t a tester, only a counselor, at the time I auditioned. And then I had no job from the end of the summer till 2008.
And the next Tournament of Champions will probably be in 2010, since the last one was just in March this year. Anyway, it’s not cut off by season nowadays, and I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to imagine I’ll be invited to the next one (assuming I’ve lost by the time they tape it, which isn’t a stretch to imagine either).
I keep an eye on taping dates (Another one in the pool) Yesterday was the first taping of the season. It’s also happening today. For others who want to keep up to date on this, this site is where they distribute tickets from . (I know it looks like Wheel tickets from the URL, but it’s not.) You need to return occasionally for updates. At the moment, it’s only showing the patch from Sept 22 - 30. Some taping dates have already had their tix distributed. Most for the season haven’t yet been announced.
Sorry I don’t have more to add, but welcome Stefan. It’s a real shame they don’t let you go against the kids in the kid and teen tournaments, you’d totally mop the floor with them!
I think I’m better off keeping quiet about that, sorry.
While I would have the knowledge advantage against them, I can’t guarantee I could beat the buzzer advantage of the youth. For example, the only competitor who really gave me a run for my money, Emily, was five years younger than me. My success came more from my thumb than my brain, in my opinion. So I can’t guarantee that I’d do as well on ringing in against the kiddies.
This week, they are showing highlights of the past 25 years. Monday was the first episode with Alex Trebek (which is why Alex looked so young), Tuesday was one featuring Eddie Timanus and Wednesday and Thursday they had two of Ken Jennings’s episodes (including the one in which he lost). I don’t know what’s planned for tonight.
Edited to add that that Monday show was only from 1984, so it hasn’t been that long.
Well to me the 1984 episode is old, because it’s older than I am!
And now I’m pissed that I skipped the rest of the week’s episodes. I love watching the episide that Ken gets bored with Jeopardy and lets Ms. NoOneRemembersMeForBeingGood have her fun. The audible shock and awe of Ken losing that you can hear from the audience is a damn good moment in TV, for me at least.
I think there was a Ken Jennings episode where he swept a “potent potables” category, and then pointed out the incongruity of a Mormon doing so. And there was the time the clue was a word that can describe either a garden tool or a person of immoral character. Ken replied, “What is a ho?” when the actual answer was “What is a rake?”
The evil Emperor Zerg, sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance! (Some people may think StarCraft, but that’s how I remember her name. I think Jennings himself even makes the same comparison in Brainiac.)
No, that’s why I called him Samson. First show without the hair, and boom. He was doing really well but missed a fairly easy Final Jeopardy. The perfect conclusion would have had him pulling down the roof on that awful-looking new set. Samson angry!
