Looking for a good split pea soup recipe that I can do in the crock pot or at least most of it in the crock pot or to find out its really not a crock pot kinda food due to the peas breaking down or whatever.
whadaya got?
(yeah I am down with hamhocks)
How can ya mess up split pea soup?
'Course, then, I’m the sorta guy who thinks the whole idea is FOR the peas to break down.
Never use a recipe, just dump in lots of split peas, four cups in my six quart crock and add whatever else sounds good. I like carrots, onions, garlic, smoked pork of some sort and bay leaf and enough water to fill the pot. If I’m going semi-vegetarian, I add a pat of butter and brown sugar to individual bowls.
I never mind making a bunch because there are so many ways to use it. After the first meal, I pour some in quart jars and freeze it for later and leave the rest to congeal in the refrigerator. If you are tired of soup, put it in a flour burrito with some pico de gallo, or your other favorite wrap filling. Tasty cold or hot.
If you really don’t like your peas to break down, just monitor them and turn off the crock while they are still somewhat hard.
Personally, I like kielbasa in my pea soup, not ham. But Ivylad made split pea soup just this past week in the crock pot. We had some leftover country ham from Christmas in the freezer, so he tossed that in the crock pot with onions, the peas, and some chicken boullion. He didn’t even need salt…the ham had that covered.
well alrighty then, I will give it a go.
I was under the impression that the peas would totally break down and you would end up with some weird mess for some reason, evidently I was just smokin crack.
The peas are supposed to break down. As long as you have enough liquid in the crock pot, you should be fine.
You will end up with something with the texture of refried beans. If that’s bad to you, then that fits the definition of a weird mess.
I tend not to want to cook my split pea soup quite so much. I like to be able to identify the individual beans, but it’s a minor issue to me.
I cook it until before it breaks down, then run a hand blender through it. You get a good mix of whole peas and puree.
I love Alton Brown’s simple & easy recipe for Curried Split Pea Soup. I make it in a slow-cooker, and it is fabulous.
You can achieve the same thing by adding a couple cans of peas and letting the splits break down.
