<Spoiler> USA v. Poland <Spoiler>

switched gamecast to the S. Korean game… have they added one a whole period in penalty time or what?

US GO THROUGH!!! Woo!

I could do live text commentary, me. I have TV and a keyboard, and an internet connection.

Perhaps we could try something via Trillian or the like, for those who can use Trillian/AIM/MSN messenger at work?

And the US breezes into the next round…cough, cough.

I’m a one man riot now! there’ll be dancing in the street… err… parking lot…

Fuck, that was agonising, and I didn’t even SEE the game!

Wow. Congratulations to the Koreans and the USA. This is shaping up as the one of the best World Cups ever!

<wipes sweat off brow>
whew—

Even a soccer-hater like me thinks it’s pretty neat to see the U.S. advance to the next round. I was quite wrapped up in the South Korea vs. Portugal game.

GOD BLESS THE SOUTH KOREANS!

DITTO ON THE <WHEW>

Guus Hiddink is a SAINT now in South Korea. Two victories and a draw, and a pass into the second round. Whodathunkit?

Don’t you need to plug the keyboard into something?

<innocent look>

I’ve also got a TV next to my PC at work. Oh, the joys of free internet access…

joys of TV at work more like!

My heart is slowly returning to normal. The South Korea/Portugal game was so tight from everything I’m reading. I’m just glad its all done and U.S. narrowly advanced.

Go South Korea!!
Go U.S.A.!!!

Well… now that I’ve had time to rationally think about all this… I’m so glad we made it through. We get Mexico on Monday I believe. A team we’re familiar with, but is playing really well.

I think we were a bit like Portugal in our first match this time around. I think we felt like Poland was a defeated team and so long as we played solidly they’d fold like a cheap rug. All we really needed to do was show up. Well, that game plan didn’t work.

All in all-- the loss was probably a good thing. Hopefully we keep this in mind-- realize we are lucky to be playing any more games at all-- and play solid games the rest of the way.

I don’t think that USA will beat Mexico though. Mind you, considering our current form I don’t think we’ll beat Denmark. I hope we do though.

Time to go over to the prediction thread

PT

Here’s one “riotous USAian ‘fuurigan’ in Osaka”. Of course the Japanese are celebrating their own victory, so I can get away with it. I was working in Namba (central Osaka) til 9:30 - the japanese fans seem to be burning it down…

Oh my! I finally made it to the bar in Dallas that is showing all the games live (Ben’s Half Yard House). I was worried about traffic, but it was early enough that there was no traffic at all. It’s a very big place and it was wierd having to park half a block away at 6:15 a.m. There was a TV and radio staion there to interview the fans. Nice free breakfast buffet, but I didn’t want to lose my spot standing at the end of the bar so I had to settle for three Bass drafts.

It was so disappointing to see those two early scores by Poland. And I have no idea what the ref was thinking by disallowing our goal which would have made it 1 - 1. We got updates on the Portugal game… one red card… 10 players, then another… Portugal down to 9 men. In the last 15 minutes I spent as much time watching Korea on a little TV across the bar instead of the big screen with the US game. Potugal damn near pulled off a draw.

The US had many good chances and blew quite a few also. :frowning: But how about our keeper? Another PK saved! Whoo Hoo!!!

Finally, congrats Poland and THANKS Korea.

I cannot believe no one has mentioned in this thread the fact that Jeff Agoos sucks!! Is there a single goal the US has allowed that some fault cannot be found with Goos (maybe, Portugal’s first goal). The guy is brutal and I think he should change his first name to <explitive deleted as we are not in the Pit>

The USA got la bit lucky, but they also earned their way in by playing very good in the first two matches. Donovan’s goal should have counted and that actually might have changed the game.

Bring on Mexico, should be a wild scene down here in Southern California with such a large Mexican population.

Up front: I know very, very little about soccer, and care even less. So, how did I KNOW that Poland would stomp the U.S.? Why was I so sure that I placed a bet with a co-worker who IS a serious soccer fan (and knows waaaay more about the game than I ever will), and won? What did I, a soccer ignoramus, understand that my friend (a soccer expert) did not?

I knew that the rest of the world HATES the United States!

Poland had a bad team, an untalented team, a team with very litte heart or character. I firmly believe that, under the circumstances (Poland was already eliminated; winning this game didn’t mean anything at all), if the Poles had been playing ANY other team, they’d have rolled over and played dead.

I mean, if Poland had been playing against Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Belize, or Wales, they’d just have gone through the motions. They’d have given up, lost 5-0, and gone home.

But NOBODY quits against the U.S. Everybody HATES the U.S. There’s no team that everybody wants to beat quite so badly. It doesn’t matter that the U.S. team isn’t very good, or that nobody in America cares about soccer. When other countires play the U.S., they do their damnedest to win.

That’s why I KNEW Poland would come out, looking for blood. That’s why I wasn’t surprised they won easily. And that’s why I’m now 20 dollars richer.

My only regret is that Poland didn’t eliminate the U.S. from the World Cup completely. The longer the U.S. stays in the World CUp, the longer the American media will feel compelled to pretend they care about soccer, and the longer they’ll keep showing highlights on TV. The sooner the U.S. is eliminated, the sooner we can stop pretending the World Cup matters to us.
