Loved the book, because I can identify with the “my mother is psycho” vibe, the southern family and because Wells’ writing rang true with me.
I heard people say that the movie was different from the book and I’m grateful because I was prepared. I am surprised to say that I loved the movie, too! They changed a lot, i.e. no trip to the Northwest, nothing about Vivi’s time at the convent and Lawanda the elephant was changed to a biplane. My biggest disappointment was the missing cocker spaniel, Hueylene.
The Ya-Yas were raunchy, alcohol-sodden and hilarious… How I hope to have friends like them when I’m old ‘n’ gray. I thought James Garner was a wonderful choice for the role of Shep; almost every scene he was in made me cry!
Both the book and the movie speak to the resentment children feel toward their parents and how little those children understand about motivations and reasons for things.
Anyone else read the book or see the movie? What did you think? Does anyone identify with the storyline?
