Anthracite posted a piece of “erotica” in this forum that I deleted (but saved) until a moderator for this forum can review it and make a final call. - Jill
I of course support and understand the actions of the SDMB completely on this.
If the story offended anyone, I apologize. My only defense for posting it is that other stories like it, and ones with much more graphic words and with far more sexual content, have been posted on this Board in the past. Compared to those, I thought my story was pretty tame.
Also, there has not yet been a precedent set for acceptable postings of this nature here in this brave, new Forum. I did not intend to offend, but obviously have done so. Thus, I throw myself and my post on the mercy of the SDMB.
I do have a simple question, however - why is “erotica” in quotes?
IMHO:
I for one find Anthracite’s stories amusing, wholesome, and uplifting.

[[I do have a simple question, however - why is “erotica” in quotes?]]
Because that’s what you called it.
Jill
I would just like to chime in and say that, while my opinion probably means beans to whoever makes the final call, I think that Anthracite’s story was very mature and well thought out and, as long as the thread title makes it very clear what is contained within, I don’t see anything wrong with “erotica” in Cafe Society. I mean it is literature. Especially that peice, that was good.
Besides, at a time like this, we need good porn - er, “erotica”.
I don’t hear that word very often. I have images of a Scooby Doo mystery involving lesbian ghost.
Marc
I for one was not offended by the story, enjoyed it, and would like to see it reposted. I also think the label “erotica” was entirely appropriate.
Well, I was wondering why it was in quotes because normally when someone does that, they are being derisive. Example:
“I really don’t buy your “logic” here.”
“That’s some, uh, “dinner” you prepared.”
“Oh yeah, it was really “spectacular”. Not.”
Apparently it was not considered erotica, or else it would have been given the simple label erotica, no quotes. One would not say “I bought a new “car” yesterday.”, for example. I’ll bet if I do a quick thread scan this will be backed up.
Which ultimately leads to the question - why do I care? Simple - it tells me that obviously the story was not considered real “erotica” by the staff, and instead was viewed as something else - porn, trash, insane ramblings, a worthless steaming pile of shit, whatever.
While those opinions wouldn’t bother me if true, it certainly influences whether you will see me posting any original works here ever again if I am allowed to. I would like some input from the Forum Moderators to tell me in general if I really was in the wrong here. I did apologize, and did say I supported the staff actions 100%, and I meant that. You guys should know from past experience that I have always done, and been sincere in, both.
Since we have no formal guidelines yet for acceptable story content in a Forum devoted in part to literary criticism, then this issue will serve to define some, I imagine. It also says that from now on all story content posted by any other poster is going to be under some pretty intense scrutiny, to see if it offends as much as my story obviously did. And now I imagine people are going to come out and say “Why was so-and-so’s story alright, and this one wasn’t?” I have to tell you, I don’t envy anyone who will have that job, so why should I make things harder on them?
It would also be nice if the person who claimed to be offended would post here and share their thoughts, but somehow I expect that we won’t be hearing from them in public…
[sub]And, of course, it all depends on what your definition of “is” is…[/sub]
Am I the only one who was disappointed when I saw this thread? I mean, I was hoping that JillGat was writing erotica, now, too.
Let me clarify something here.
I am not complaining in the least about the issue of Board actions here at all. It was valid, proper, and I support both JillGat and the SDMB 100%. I guess in a very poor way I am saying I am being oversensitive, and seeing the reference to the story treated in what looked like (unintentionally or otherwise) an offhand or derisive manner just really hurt my feelings. I’m not the only one who felt this way about it too.
Now I’m under too much stress now to care anymore. I quit. Someone just delete the damn story so I don’t make any more waves here. If anyone wants to read it, come to my Board and read it there. Besides, only three people commented on it anyhow, so it’s obvious it was just an ill-received piece of shit anyways.
And I want the person who complained about it in the first place to either post or to mail me so we can open a dialogue, and I can apologize for offending them.
All this brouhaha has piqued my interest. Anthracite, what’s your other board so I can see your literary efforts?
Hey, Una? Jill only removed the thread because she wasn’t sure what the policy was, and said she’d wait to see what one of the CS moderators thought. We haven’t heard back from any of them yet (at least, not in this thread), so we still don’t know. Don’t give up just yet.

Oh, gimme a break… this is absolutely untrue, Anthracite. I put quotes around a quote and that is that. It was not meant to be derisive. It was obviously written as erotica. And it was very explicit. Another member complained that it was not appropriate for a public message board. Other moderators read it and agreed. This is not my forum, and I was only responding at the request of another member who was offended. I defer to Euty or Ike for a final opinion. - Jill

My decision is that the thread will stay deleted. It was a nice enough story, if you like that sort of thing (which I do) but in my opinion it crossed the line into what some people would consider pornography and would open the floodgates to other threads which would be blatant porno. Yes we did let things go in MPSIMS for a while but after some thought, we decided things had gotten a little bit carried away (See UncleBeer’s post here) and asked everyone to tone it down. The same request will apply here.

Then in all fairness you now need to delete these threads as well, which also contain my stories:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=58398
I will be checking to see when they go.
I guess that means my sig has to change as well now.
JillGat, I really admire you, but I still must take issue with your stance on this. One lone word is not a quote. I hope you understand what I am talking about - I gave clear examples. You certainly may not have intended to offend me, but surely you must admit that the use of the quote in that context is typically reserved for derisive use. Can you at least see how it might have been viewed as such by me? And that I wasn’t trying to bitch about nothing?
But I give up now - you win, and it’s a moot point anyhow. My story is gone, and the rest will have to go as well for consistancy’s sake, hopefully tonight. So be it.
Well, I resent you putting words in my mouth and not taking me at my word. Take issue all you want. - Jill
Una my dear, can I hang this cross a little higher for you?
The mods did their job regarding this ONE issue. It goes no further and is no reflection or judgement on you or your sig or anything else.
So please, get your panties out of a wad and knock it off, okay? Thank you.
your humble TubaDiva
While I have no interest in lesbian erotica, spooky or otherwise, I do know where people who are interested can find some that is supposed to be good. The mailings from the Sci-fi book club frequently offer books of short stories featuring lesbian vampires and other such supernatural entities. I’m sure if you go to their site you could look into finding out who they’re by and what they’re called. http://www.sfbc.com/
