"Spore" is coming.

That’s right. After 15 years of waiting in development (+/- a couple), “Spore” will finally be released 15 September, 2008.

Is anyone else still excited? I tried not to be because of the constant disappointments, but the closer the day gets here I can’t help but be giddy.

Very Excited. I waited until the tech specs were released to purchase a new desktop because I had to know that I could play Spore. I’ve been creating creatures on the Creature Creator and doing my part to populate the Spore universe. I’ve uploaded 38 so far to the Sporepedia. You can check them out on my Myspore page. Only 29 day, 4 hours, and about 10 minutes left.

Sept 7 actually (US).

Holy cow, that’s not far off at all. I keep pushing it to the back of my mind, so I don’t die from antici…

…pation.

Really interested in this game, but I’m going to wait for reviews. I’m torn between my desire to play and my personal boycott of craptastic DRM schemes.

I’m hopefully optimistic* but somewhat frightened. I don’t really like a great fraction of the creatures people are putting out–especially not the “featured” creatures you can find in the Sporepedia–and video demos of gameplay have made it appear to me to be a little too simplistic. (I knew it wasn’t going to be a strategic minefield, but in video demos its starting to appear, for example, as though in Creature phase, other creatures don’t really stray from their nests and do anything but rather wait for you to come to them and decide how to deal with them. Stuff like this doesn’t seem fun.)

But I remain optimistic. How could the makers of the Sim games go too wrong?

Anyway, gotta plug my creatures.

*To the extent that I went ahead and pre-ordered the special edition from Best Buy, in part because for some reason they’re offering it $20 cheaper than everyone else.

I too am a little wary of the hype. In particular the Civ and Space modes.

It looks like all you do is create some little walled mini-city and then send a handful of units over to destroy your neighbors. I haven’t seen much in the way of roads and farms and other infrastructure that makes it actually look like your planet has a civilization.

But who knows. They’ve been working on this for like 5 years. It will probably be great or the videogame equivalent of Waterworld.

I won’t be buying at launch - ever since they cut out the water mode, I’m very wary. Significant scope cutbacks are a danger sign to me. I’ll be waiting for reviews to come out.

The reviews right at launch are not necessarily a good indicator of how good a game is, either. I’m going to wait a few months, and then check out what people are saying about the game. It was weeks and weeks before anyone had the guts to come out and say that grand theft auto 4 was kind of disappointing, and I suspect spore will be the same.

I suspect those people were kind of out of their mind!
I’m going to buy it as soon as it comes out. I mean there will always be people who don’t like a particular game no matter how awesome it is.

Wikipedia says Spore will contain 18 different types of editors, among which are creatures, buildings, vehicles, planets, and music.

I was excited.

Then I found out they were cutting out the water level and other stuff.

Then I found out the creature editor doesn’t work on my Mac.

Now I’m moderately enthused.

I was depressed about that too, then I realised it’s EA-Maxis, given their track record (the Sims games) I figured they’ll add it in one of the Three-Trillion expansion packs they’ll release.

I’m still not certain whether to be happy or angry about this epiphany.

It works on Macs in general, doesn’t it? Any idea why it won’t work on yours?

I have the slightly older imac without the Intel chip, and Spore (or at least Creature Creator) requires the Intel chip to run. Which is how I discovered to my surprise that the mac mini that my brother bought just a few months ago doesn’t sport the Intel Chip :dubious:

I do love the various youtube videos that have sprouted up with dancing penises from the creature creature though
